Social media is buzzing with the new Tim Robinson workplace comedy, The Chair Company, which starts off more like a family drama but keeps revealing bigger surprises for the viewers. The story revolves around an eccentric, sharp but weird middle-aged guy named William Ronald Trosper, aka Ron (portrayed by Tim Robinson), who suddenly finds himself overwhelmed with a new promotion at work that lands him the role of a project manager.
On top of that, right after his project initiation speech, Ron faces an embarrassing situation at work as his chair breaks down out of the blue. Obsessed with the whole thing, Ron sets out to seek revenge for his humiliation and starts digging into "The Chair Company," aka Tecca, which manufactured the chairs in his office.
While attempting to file a complaint against the firm, Ron accidentally unearths dark secrets about the company, which gets him indirectly involved with the underworld. The Chair Company does not waste time in switching from a drama-packed workplace sitcom to a full-fledged mystery thriller, and its 100% RT scores prove how well the show is breaking all conventions of the genre.
Tim Robinson's new workplace comedy series, The Chair Company, hides a big conspiracy theory-based thriller plot
The new Tim Robinson comedy, The Chair Company, is doing pretty well so far with the perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and commendable numbers on IMDb as well. It is not the typical mystery thriller where a somewhat obsessed protagonist goes around solving a case that might land him, as well as his family, in trouble.
But the HBO series is so much more and different than that. It initially sets up the perfect mood of a workplace sitcom with short episodes of bittersweet family drama. And even before you realize, the central theme shifts to an action-packed thriller.
It leaves fans even more stunned when a brilliant and weird Ross (from Friends) like character turns into a tech-savvy detective who does not have great fighting skills but is yet fearless. For instance, the way Tim Robinson's Ron went into the deserted Tecca plot to find out clues about the mysterious chair company is not something any ordinary man would do.
Ron is extraordinary, and he has always been - it is just that he never realized it until he got the chance to unravel a dangerous and illegal business chain. Tecca is not just a chair company, and as we have witnessed in Episode 4 of the HBO comedy, Ron is close to tearing apart a global drug racket dealing in a unique form of opioid.
The way the plot escalates (despite the short episodes) does not feel rushed at all; thanks to an impeccable delivery and flawless storytelling by Tim Robinson. The small amount of action is also very little intense, and it further helps to stick to the tone of a comedy show. The protagonist is also not the typical muscular guy with great brains and sharp combat skills. He has a rather feeble appearance, but his eccentric energy and intelligence keep him right on track.
Ron is also fierce when it comes to protecting his family, but the way he does it maintains the sweetness and innocence of the character. He has his own theory about The Chair Company that is clearly doing way more dangerous things than just producing chairs.
Moreover, he gets entwined with one problem after another (both on and off work) from the moment he starts his self-hired investigation. It further helps to switch subtly between comic moments to intense sequences.
The Chair Company is a mystery thriller at its core, but the upper layers consistently serve elements of comedy. The viewers will not even expect the sinister moments to arrive out of the blue. It is like one moment you are rolling on the floor laughing with Tim Robinson's hilarious presence, and the very next moment is filled with suspense.
