Before El Camino picked up Breaking Bad's Jesse Pinkman and his bruised, bleeding story, Aaron Paul did something very Aaron Paul coded. He casually summarized five seasons of Breaking Bad in under two and a half minutes, live on late night television, and somehow made it both unhinged and perfectly accurate.

Delivered ahead of the 2019 Netflix film, the rapid fire recap distilled Vince Gilligan’s sprawling crime saga into its most chaotic essentials. Meth cooking, science crimes, flying pizzas, exploding wheelchairs, and an alarming fixation on breakfast all made the cut.

He starts it off by talking about Walt as he says,

“There’s this chemistry teacher named Walt who gets cancer, his wife Skyler is pregnant, and his son, Walt Jr., really loves breakfast. Then Walt starts cooking meth to pay for his medical bills, with the help of his former student, Jesse — that’s me.”

Some of his highlights include, Hank the DEA brother-in-law circling closer, Tuco getting blown up along with his bell ringing wheelchair uncle, Jesse falling in love with Jessica Jones aka Krysten Ritter, friendships with Skinny Pete and Badger the person, Jesse shooting Gale despite his great coffee, everyone dying including Hank, Mike, Lydia, and Jesse’s girlfriend and Jesse finally driving away in an El Camino, which is also exactly where the movie begins.

Jesse Pinkman is a huge reason why Breaking Bad works the way it does. Created by Vince Gilligan as a disposable small time dealer, Jesse was originally meant to die early in the series. Instead, Aaron Paul turned him into the emotional center of the show, a character whose pain, guilt, and conscience expose the true cost of Walter White’s choices. Jesse’s relationship with Walt is central to the series, functioning as a warped father son dynamic built on exploitation and dependence. Walt repeatedly claims to care for Jesse, yet consistently puts him in harm’s way. Jesse, desperate for approval and belonging, keeps returning, even as the cost becomes unbearable.

El Camino finally gives Jesse the peace he deserves, as his character chooses to build a new life in Alaska and leave behind his past as a meth cook. With the help of his friends and a certain "disappearer" he goes to a new life and leaves behind his tragic past.

Aaron Paul’s performance is the engine behind the iconic character. The role earned him three Emmy Awards and widespread critical praise and a solo Netflix movie. It remains, till this day, one of Paul's most iconic roles on screen.

Breaking Bad and El Camino is available to stream on Netflix.
