Home Improvement was one of the most popular sitcoms in the 90s, and even featured a show-within-a-show, called Tool Time, which was one of the key highlights of the sitcom that kept fans entertained for eight seasons. Who played who in Home Improvement's show-within-a-show, Tool Time?
Every episode of Home Improvement featured Tim's in-house show, which he called Tool Time. In this show, Allen's character is seen hosting a home improvement-themed show, where he is assisted by a few other characters.
The main host of the show is Tim Allen's own character, Tim, but he is assisted by his friend and co-host, the very mild-mannered Al Borland, played by Richard Karn, and a "Tool Time girl," who is played by two different characters through the course of the show. While the original Tool Time girl is Pamela Anderson's Lisa, she later gets replaced by Debbe Dunning's Heidi.
The purpose of the Tool Time girl is to simply introduce Tim and Al at the beginning of the show, and get the audience excited for the show by asking the question:
"Does everybody know what time it is?"
In response, the audience cheers:
"TOOL TIME!"
This three-character ensemble essentially consists of the cast of Tool Time, which is supposedly a parody of the PBS show, This Old House. In fact, the characters of Tim and Al even pay homage to the hosts of the original show with simple nuances like their outfits.
Al is often seen sporting a beard and flannel shirts, which was a signature look for master carpenter Norm Abram on the original show. Tim's character is supposed to represent the original host, Bob Vila, who has incidentally appeared in several episodes of Home Improvement.
