3) Evolution (Season 9, Episode 8)

While numerous threats are looming around in the Walking Dead universe, the main threat has always been the walkers. It became even more terrifying when the survivors thought the dead were evolving when the Whisperers were first introduced. In Episode 8 of Season 9, Eugene was trapped in a dangerous situation, resulting in Daryl, Aaron, and Jesus going out to rescue him.

While looking for Eugene, they encountered a herd of walkers who were circling and making a bigger herd. It was the first time for the group to witness walkers behave like that. As they moved on, the episode became more horrifying as the walkers, led by the whisperers, attacked them in the dead of the night, resulting in the death of Jesus, one of the beloved characters of the show.

The episode was scary from the beginning, and with the introduction of the whisperers, it became scarier. The group fighting with a herd of walkers and also protecting one injured member in the dead of night, while trapped outside the safe zone, made it one of the most terrifying episodes of the horror show.

2) The Grove (Season 4, Episode 14)

The Grove was another of the most terrifying episodes of the series, not because of the scary walkers but for depicting how the zombie apocalypse affected the survivors, especially the children, who grew up seeing violence all around them. Lizzie was one of those children. Even after others telling her about the danger of being near a walker, Lizzi thought of them as her friends, and used to feed them mice when they were in prison.

However, on their way to Terminus, her mental instability began to come through and harm people around her. She even stabbed her younger sister, Mika, hoping she would turn into a walker. Realizing Lizzie’s dangerous instability, Carol makes the heartbreaking decision to shoot her. The episode depicted the moralistic concepts and whether they could be applied in a post-apocalyptic world, where not dying was the main goal.

1) On the Inside (Season 11, Episode 6)

According to many The Walking Dead fans, On the Inside is regarded as the most terrifying episode. In the episode, Connie and Virgil run into a house while escaping from walkers. Initially, they think that they have escaped a life-threatening moment. However, soon, they realise that inside the house lives a feral family, who begin to hunt them down.

The feral family was terrifying on its own, but the horror intensified when the episode shifted to Connie’s perspective. As a deaf character, the viewers were shown Connie’s situation as she could not hear when the ferals attacked her. The episode repeatedly shifted to Connie’s silent perspective, forcing viewers to experience the same disorienting absence of sound that heightened the sense of danger.

The whole storyline and depiction of how Connie dealt with the dangers around her is among the scariest scenes from the horror series.
