When we hear the word Friends, we’re sure to visualize the famous café and those neighbors who felt like our personal confidants. Every character contributed in their own specific way, from Monica’s obsession with cleanliness to Chandler’s sharp-witted humor, but the character of Phoebe Buffay was never less than the most unpredictable one.
She is surprising, wonderfully crazy, and truly alluring. The odd character of Phoebe is not a minor joke; rather, it is an asset. Whether she is singing a strange song of her own or speaking in a very casual way about a past traumatic life event, she is the number one feature that can be the plot of any story.
These are the five episodes in which Phoebe's outlandish and magnetic personality is truly highlighted by the plot.
1.“The One with the Jellyfish” (Friends Season 4, Episode 1)
Though the main storyline involves Chandler's unintentional change through a hypnosis tape, Phoebe is at the same time and in a sense the main impact of Chandler's transformation, as well as a comic relief.
Her suppressing and deadpan acting give the needed contrast to the mayhem around. She doesn’t need a speech with a strong punchline to be the most amusing one at the gathering; it’s her quirky and discreet timing that does the trick.
2. “The One with Phoebe’s Husband” (Friends Season 2, Episode 4)
In the ultimate beach-trip panic moment when Ross is stung, Phoebe is the calm eye of a very peculiar storm. She tackles the emergency with a kind of strange wisdom that is unique to her.
While the others are losing their cool, Phoebe’s crazy logic and storytelling turn a disgusting incident into a legendary, funny moment.
3. “The One with the Apothecary Table” (Friends Season 6, Episode 11)
The revelation of Phoebe's secret marriage might have been just another ordinary sitcom plot twist, but her way of doing it had been so remarkable that it could not be forgotten.
The technique she used to handle the discomfort of the disclosure, right down to the expertly timed pauses and the mind-boggling justifications, was a demonstration that her bizarre character could exert the influence of an entire episode.
4. “The One with the Hypnosis Tape.” (Friends Season 3, Episode 18)
Phoebe was in such a frenzy about Rachel purchasing and using furniture that was mass-produced that she went on to say the table was a cursed antique. Her total commitment to this fabricated backstory is comedy gold.
She even manages to lure the rest of the cast into her web of superstition in the end, proving that her imagination is still more powerful than reality.
5. “The One with the Baby on the Bus” (Friends Season 2, Episode 6)
Phoebe's unconventionality as the babysitter for Ben brings about nothing but pure disaster. The other characters are trying to cope with their adult responsibilities while Phoebe is acting out her random whims and applying her strange problem-solving techniques.
You can't help watching her, and at the same time, you wonder how much she can stretch her logic before it entirely collapses.
Upon reflection, one realizes that Phoebe Buffay was the perfect ingredient to prevent Friends from descending into a very realistic and boring series. She never expressed herself using grandiose setups or stunts; rather, she was always there to sing about her "Smelly Cat" or offer dream-like-feeling advice.
The unpredictability of the show due to her being the main character kept it alive and kicking in these episodes. Phoebe not only takes part in the scene, but rather she takes over it.
