The Good Place, created by Michael Schur, also known for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is a hilarious and smart series centered around Eleanor Shellstrop, played by Kristen Bell. When Eleanor dies, she wakes up in The Good Place, which is a highly selective and paradise-like afterlife designed by an architect, Michael, but there is just one problem— Eleanor doesn't belong there.
She realised that she hadn't been a good person on earth, and to avoid her transfer to the Bad Place, she tried to become a better person. The show received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for 14 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, along with additional recognition in acting, writing, and set design. Fans are in awe of the comedy moments the show is able to pull off while also dealing with deep subjects like what it truly means to be good. Or is morality a fixed code or a constant learning process?
Here are the 5 funniest moments from The Good Place that will make you binge-watch all 4 seasons
The Good Place is one of those rare shows that perfectly balances philosophy, absurd comedy, and heart. If you need reasons to binge all four seasons, here are 5 of the funniest moments that will hook you instantly.
Jason Mendoza's Big Reveal
In The Good Place, Season 1, Episode 11, titled What's My Motivation Jason reveals what his actual profession is. For half of the season, everyone believes that Jason is a silent Buddhist Monk by the name Jianyu and then, as a hilarious turn of events, the show reveals that Jason is actually a Florida DJ and amateur EDM artist who loves Molotov cocktails and Blake Bortles.
He got to know that Eleanor doesn't belong here and randomly breaks his silence to her. Even she seems shocked at first, but then advises him to just be himself. A few moments later, they find Jason playing EDM music and vibing.
2. Janet’s Reboot Meltdowns
In Season 2, Episode 3, Janet becomes slightly unhinged as usual as she is rebooted, and the event turns hilarious when she starts to malfunction and spits out random objects, glitching like a robot. She spits out pennies at Michael in one of the scenes, where Michael then tries to find out the reason behind her glitching. Janet is an AI-like informational assistant who starts to glitch when she lies to someone. Watching her cheerfully glitch out becomes one of the show's most bizarre and hilarious running gags.
3. Eleanor's Shrimp Obsession in The Fake Good Place
In season 1, Eleanor becomes obsessed with the shrimp stand. Right from the pilot, Eleanor’s selfish glee at the endless cocktail shrimp, instead of grasping the stakes of being in the afterlife, sets the tone for her character. In one of the scenes, she says,
“Holy motherforking shirtballs, I can’t believe this is all for me!”
The shrimp fountain becomes iconic, and her undying love for shellfish never gets old. It also resembles her life on earth, which was materialistic and selfish.
4. Chidi’s Eternal Indecisiveness
Chidi is the ethics professor and is portrayed as extremely indecisive, which becomes a running joke in the show and also adds to his character. Season 3, Episode 9 titled "Don’t Let the Good Life Pass You By", Chidi becomes so indecisive that he gives himself a stomach ache trying to choose a muffin. The constant moral dilemmas he faces lead to full-on mental breakdowns that are played for perfect comedic timing.
“I'm not sure what to do. Should I sit? Should I stand? Is this a dream? Am I wearing pants?!”
Watching him try to choose a hat ethically is pure comedy gold.
5. Michael's Failed Attempt at Laughing
Michael's evil laugh is another hilarious layer in The Good Place, which keeps coming up in different contexts. Whenever Michael reveals to someone that this is actually the Bad Place, he does his evil laugh. Michael is the demon who is trying to act human, and in one of the scenes he attempts to mimic human laughter and fails completely.
It’s the most awkward, alien laughter you’ll ever hear — and it’s hilarious. Ted Danson nails it.
