The Shaw family has been in shambles owing to their deep and complicated history on Tracker, especially the relationship between Colter and Russell.
Most of the issues stemmed from their father's death and their mother's version of the events. For a very long time, Colter and Russell have suffered because of their father's death, mostly because they believed Mary's lies and allowed them to poison their lives.
Season 3 premiere leaves viewers hanging with a cliffhanger of an ending, but on the same thread, it clears up a lot of the misunderstanding between the two brothers.
Keep reading to find out how the premiere forever changed the brothers' relationship for good on Tracker.
Tracker Showrunner reveals the shocking twist in Season 3 premiere

Jensen Ackles' Russell finally returns on Tracker for not one but two episodes, and it was everything one would expect and then some more. He entered right in the midst of a bar fight. Even though some good old fighting started this reunion, the heart-to-heart that it ended with shocked viewers even more than the bar brawl. Colter and Russell have the final heart-to-heart conversation about their father's death and their mother's lies, which these brothers have long been due for.
The circumstances behind their father's death have been the sore point of the brothers' relationship. For a very long time, Russell and Colter were mad at each other, but by the end of the third season's finale, Russell finds out what actually happened when their father died.
Colter finally fills Russell in on the past, which the audience learned at the end of Tracker Season 2. Twenty-two years ago, Mary wanted to leave her husband, Ashton, and take her kids with her, owing to his paranoia, which kept getting worse every day. So, she asked the local lineman, Otto Waldron, for help. When Otto confronted Ashton about his paranoia, the conversation soon turned physical, leading to Ashton's fall, which caused his death.
The Tracker showrunner, Elwood Reid, in a recent conversation with TVLine, talked about whether Russell has been in contact with Mary all this time:
"I think the short answer is no not really. Maybe a “Hey, I’m in Canada”-type check-in, but nothing deeper. Russell has a different understanding of what went on in that family before Ashton’s death, and that comes out in their conversation. He was the older brother, the protector, and he saw things Colter didn’t. But his mom lied to him, too."
Reid's comments reveal that even though Russell was the older brother and had a protective nature towards his family and noticed everything more than his brother did, he was still lied to by Mary. Mary's lies about their father's death spilled poison between the two brothers. This reveal will force the brothers to work on airing out that poison and work on their relationship.
"This season is about airing out that poison - the lies that infected the whole family, especially their relationship with Mary. We’ll eventually get a scene with Mom that gives more context, but right now, both brothers are still trying to figure out how much of her story they can actually believe."
Reid also talked about how things have gotten to the point that they did on Tracker. Russell went along with his mom's lies because he thought it was protecting his brother, but Colter was stuck and unable to move on, holding in a lot of resentment for his family because he didn't know what happened in reality.
"Yeah, absolutely. He thought he was protecting his brother and went along with the easy lie Mary offered, but now he’s seen the damage it’s done to Colter. Russell’s probably spent years wishing Colter would move on, but he knows that’s not going to happen. Colter’s stuck, and Russell’s instinct - once again - is to reach in and help."
The way the two brothers just sit down and have a heart-to-heart conversation about everything that has poisoned their relationship for so long was truly amazing, and by the end of it, they accept each other's apologies and decide to move on. Whether Colter will be able to is a whole other thing that we'll get to see in Tracker moving forward.
