Trainwreck: Balloon Boy will feature the Balloon Boy hoax incident that took place in Fort Collins, Colorado, on October 15, 2009. The incident occurred when frantic parents, Richard and Mayumi Heene, made a chaotic 911 call about their 6-year-old son, Falcon.

The parents claimed that Falcon was trapped in their homemade helium-filled gas balloon, which was released into the atmosphere. It was confirmed that the balloon, which resembled a flying silver saucer, had reached 7,000 feet (2,100 m) during its 90-minute flight.

Trainwreck: Balloon Boy will explore the aftermath of this incident, which became national news after National Guard helicopters and local police teamed up to pursue the balloon and rescue young Falcon.

However, after the balloon landed near Denver International Airport, the child was nowhere to be found, which raised suspicions of a hoax. Later, Falcon was found hiding in his home's attic, claiming it was 'for show.'

While people saw the incident with scrutiny, Falcon became the balloon boy, gaining publicity, as the Heenes had wished. Balloon Boy will feature interviews with witnesses, journalists, and investigators attached to this maddening 2009 incident.

Catch Balloon Boy on Netflix on July 15, 2025.
