Directed by Alex Wood, Trainwreck: The Real Project X follows the real-life events from a small Dutch town in 2012, where several people flocked to a party that quickly turned into chaos. It will be out on Netflix on July 8, 2025.

Here's the synopsis, per IMDb:

"A Dutch teen's accidental public Facebook party invite goes viral, inspired by Project X movie. Thousands RSVP. Officials ignore warnings. With no entertainment planned, arriving crowds in Haren turn to rioting."

Trainwreck: The Real Project X uses archival footage along with participants' first-person interviews and the witnesses to give a sense of everything that went down on that fateful night. It all happened long before people started prioritizing their privacy on social media. That's how a Dutch teenager's Facebook invite went viral.

Teenagers arrived there in big numbers, hoping to spend the night recklessly, much like Project X, the American found-footage teen comedy that released the same year. However, it led to some serious consequences and real-world repercussions that they were not remotely ready for.

The local authorities were not prepared to handle the massive crowd that RSVP'd for this viral event. On the other hand, the people who made it go viral had not made the provisions for the party. So, what could have been an entertaining night quickly turned into a full-blown riot and became a sensation.

Trainwreck has become one of the chart-topping titles on Netflix. Recently, Trainwreck: Poop Cruise was observed to be the most popular title on the platform at the time.

According to Netflix's Tudum, here is the intention behind making this series:

"This summer, the Trainwreck anthology will revisit some of the most gripping, bizarre — and sometimes even horrifying — events that once dominated the mainstream media. The headlines may sound familiar — “Boy Trapped in ‘UFO-Like Balloon’ Floating Over Colorado,” or “Toilets Overflowing as Stricken Ship Limps Towards Port” — but behind the sensational coverage and sound bites are complex stories, essential questions, and real people who found themselves at the center of the chaos."

The first episode, titled 'The Astroworld Tragedy,' premiered on June 10, and four more episodes were released in the subsequent weeks. Here are their titles:

  • 2: Mayor of Mayhem
  • 3: Poop Cruise
  • 4: The Cult of American Apparel

Trainwreck: The Real Project X will be released on Netflix on July 8, 2025.
