Kevin O'Leary, a Shark Tank investor, has never held back his opinions, and this time, he's targeting former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In response to Mark Carney's surprising political victory, O'Leary blamed Trudeau for Canada's economic downturn and described Carney's ascension as a last-ditch effort to repair the damage. With inflation, stagnant GDP, and investor flight on the table, Carney believes he has inherited a crisis-ridden country.

He stated in an interview, "Trudeau is an idiot and Carney is not. And so hopefully the idiot king is gone, replaced by somebody who has a better track record. And now it's all up to him. Can he do anything? He's got 18 months. If he doesn't deliver, the Canadians will kick him out and hire somebody else."

O'Leary praised Carney's clever use of Donald Trump's inflammatory remarks to mobilize national support, despite the Liberal Party's economic failures under Trudeau. He did, however, warn that without a majority mandate, Carney's leadership is on borrowed time. With only 12 to 18 months to establish his worth, Carney now has the arduous task of restoring market confidence and undoing years of economic damage. The nation and detractors like O'Leary will be watching.

Shark Tank investor Kevin O’Leary weighs in on Carney’s leadership and economic outlook

Kevin O'Leary didn't hold back in criticizing Mark Carney's surprising climb to prominence. He argued that Carney's victory was motivated more by capitalizing on American political threats than by ability.

"Carney was very successful in playing the fear of Trump"

The Shark Tank investor was referring to Trump's incendiary proposal that the United States could buy Canada. The strange speech sent shockwaves through Canadian politics, and Carney used it as a significant talking point to distract from the Liberal Party's economic record. O'Leary emphasized that the Trudeau government left Canada in a catastrophic position.

"We know we've put Canada into an economic coma... 25% of the population of Canada is now at the poverty line"

He blamed the Liberals for slow GDP growth, a weaker dollar, and investor fright. Despite these facts, O’Leary argued, Carney’s campaign relied on distracting from them using fear-based narratives.

Shark Tank OG was especially wary of Carney’s lack of a majority government,

"If you don't win a majority mandate... 12 to 18 months is usually another election"

This, according to O'Leary, indicates instability and low public confidence. It puts Carney in a difficult situation, as he must quickly repair what the previous administration broke. Nonetheless, O'Leary suggested a careful road forward.

"Things couldn't be worse. It would be very difficult to make things worse."

Shark Tank expert believes that if Carney scraps investor-deterring laws like Bill C-69 and restores confidence in Canadian markets, he might just hold the government together.
