HBO’s True Detective has aired four seasons so far, but the very first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson remains the most memorable. The two actors set the screen on fire with their intense performances as Detective Rustin 'Rust' Cohle and Detective Martin 'Marty'Hart.

Both actors not only received critical acclaim and the audience’s applause for their roles, but also earned Emmy Award nominations. Now, 11 years later, the two actors might be gearing up for their return to the show.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto has revealed that he has a new story in mind for another season of the series, which could bring back Rust and Marty. He also added that McConaughey and Harrelson are open to reprising their roles in the show.

Nic Pizzolatto, in a recent interview with Nothing Left Unsaid podcast, talked about McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s potential return to True Detective. The series creator said he has a character-driven story in mind that could reintroduce Rust and Marty into the show. However, he added that the idea is still in a nascent stage, and he does not have a concrete script yet:

“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day. It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, I had that in my head.”

Pizzolatto added that he has already had conversations with McConaughey and Harrelson, and they are willing to reprise their roles as Rustin Cohle and Martin Hart, respectively. Then again, the creator is not sure at this stage if things would materialize or not:

“And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”

The trio already reunited earlier this year for a commercial about the True To Texas campaign. Pizzolatto wrote and directed the ad, with McConaughey and Harrelson appearing as their True Detective characters. The two actors were joined by Dennis Quaid for the commercial.

True Detective premiered on HBO in 2014 and follows an anthology format, with new detectives investigating some intriguing mysteries every season. The debut season was headlined by McConaughey and Harrelson, while Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams took the narrative forward in the second season.

Mahershala Ali played the lead in Season 3, and the latest and fourth installment featured Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as the detectives. HBO has already ordered a fifth season, which is currently in development.

Meanwhile, Pizzolatto parted ways from the project after Season 3 in 2019, after which Issa López replaced him as the showrunner. Pizzolatto reflected on his decision to leave the show on the podcast, and said he did not want to go into a dark territory anymore:

“I myself was spiritually tired of walking in that much darkness. And dealing with such dark materials. And then I got full custody of my daughter back and that was a situation where I really needed to be a father… and I had to step away from a lot of work in 2020.”

True Detective is available to stream on Max.
