Revenge-mystery fans will find Netflix's recently released Spanish thriller series Two Graves quite interesting, as it keeps you on the edge of your seat till its explosive finale. The three-part revenge mystery drama stars Kiti Mánver, Hovik Keuchkerian, and Álvaro Morte in the lead roles.
The series follows the disappearance of two teenage best friends, Veronica and Marta, who did not return from a party two years ago. While the police found Marta's body in the Mediterranean Sea, there is no evidence about Veronica's whereabouts. Although the case had seemingly gone cold after two years, Veronica’s grandmother, Isabel, and Marta’s father, Rafael, teamed up to investigate what happened to their children at that fateful party.
The Two Graves finale revealed the chilling identity of Marta's killer as Antonio comes clean to his mother, Isabel, that Veronica is well and alive, but in hiding. As it turns out, Marta’s tragic death was the result of a heated scuffle with Veronica, during which an accidental push caused her to fatally hit her head. After Isabel realises that she has exposed Veronica's location to Rafael and he is out for revenge, she rushes to save her granddaughter at last.
Here is the complete Two Graves ending explained.
Two Graves ending explained: What happened to Veronica and Marta?
One of the central mysteries at the heart of Two Graves is the fates of Veronica and Marta. This comes to light after Antonio comes clean to his mother about the events of that fateful night. According to Antonio's account, the two best friends and Veronica's partner, Jamila, were accompanied by Beltrán (one of their friends) to a shady party, where Marta was s*xually assaulted by Carlos Jaen, a celebrity TV news anchor.
After Marta wished to report Carlos to the police, Veronica was scared that society and the police would not believe them, and a famous and powerful celebrity like Carlos would go free. She was fearful that the police would assassinate their characters, further tarnishing their families' reputation in front of the world.
Realising that she has no choice but to take her life, Marta decides to stab herself, but Veronica eventually saves her. However, this scuffle leads to Marta unintentionally cutting Veronica with a glass. In exchange, Veronica pushes her friend, and Marta fatally hits her head on the concrete, thus leading to her tragic death.
Two Graves ending explained: How did Antonio save Veronica after Marta's death?
While Veronica was not directly responsible for Marta's murder, she was overcome by guilt and went straight to her father. Antonio, who knew that Marta's gangster father would be out for Veronica's blood in revenge, concocts a plan in the Two Graves finale. As confessed by Antonio to Isabel, he dumped Marta's bloodied body into the Mediterranean Sea and sent her daughter away to Morocco to live with his friend Farhid. Antonio planned to fake Veronica’s death to keep her safe and later move the family to Morocco once the investigation cooled down.
In the meantime, Veronica reconnected with her partner Jamila, and the two women were living a peaceful life. Antonio joined Marta's father and Isabel in Veronica's search for two years, until his mother exposed the couple's location to Rafael, jeopardising Veronica and Jamila's lives.
Two Graves ending explained: Isabel finally succeeds in saving her granddaughter
One of the major themes of Two Graves is Isabel's guilt over Antonio and Veronica, and how she was primarily an absent mother and grandmother to them. Isabel's obsession with Veronica's disappearance was partly because of her combined guilt towards her, which came to a head in the finale.
After Antonio's confession, she realises that she has potentially endangered Veronica's peace, and Rafael is now out for revenge, since Veronica is alive. While she contemplated throwing Jamila under the bus and pinning the blame for Marta's murder on her, she decided to sacrifice her life in the end. After confessing to Veronica’s role in Marta’s death to Rafael during their drive, Isabel deliberately plunged the car off a cliff.
In the Two Graves finale, Isabel drove their car into the Mediterranean Sea, following which Rafael hit his head on the windshield and died instantly inside the car, leaving a smiling Isabel, who finally managed to save her granddaughter at last. Finally, Isabel allowed herself to drown, completing her redemption arc and ensuring Veronica’s safety.
While it is unclear whether Veronica and Jamila will reconnect after the Two Graves ending, the lovers are finally safe, thanks to Isabel's sacrifice.
