Season 1 of Under a Dark Sun ended on an emotional note, with lingering tensions, heartfelt resolutions, and a sense of quiet closure. But not everything was neatly tied up. Set against the haunting beauty of the French countryside, this crime drama, titled Provence, unravels the dark, intricate history of a family steeped in deception, violence, and long-buried secrets. The story follows Alba, a single mother, who returns to her childhood home only to be drawn into a tangled web of lies after the murder of her biological father, Arnaud Lasserre. What begins as a reluctant homecoming quickly spirals into a multi-generational saga of betrayal, revenge, and a hidden inheritance that changes everything.

Although the larger question of why Arnaud was killed is answered after the series, the murder of the Lasserre family leaves a few loose ends with several knock-on effects. Manon's betrayal, Leo's doomed attempt at self-preservation, and Nadia's return to take control of the estate are only some of the many options that are still up for grabs if the Under a Dark Sun Season starts for another season.

Here are five open-ended questions that Under a Dark Sun Season 2 needs to address

1. Is Manon ever going to face the consequences for having murdered Arnaud in Under a Dark Sun?

One of the biggest Under a Dark Sun plot twists is that the murderer is Manon, Arnaud's granddaughter and Alba's cousin. In Season 1, though, she receives no legal retribution. Rather, she and Alba plot to frame Hadrien (Manon's brother) for the crime, and Hadrien is murdered in a fight with Alba's son, Leo.

Though this removes Leo from prosecution, it raises the question of whether or not the truth ever will be told. If and when the show ever returns, it will have to consider whether Manon's secret is still a secret or if guilt, evidence, or someone else later outs her.

2. Can Leo heal from murdering Hadrien in Under a Dark Sun?

Leo's story is tragically underdeveloped. He is drawn into his brutal family and kills Hadrien in self-defense against an abducting plot. Though the act was a question of survival, Leo is still a child who has murdered. The series does not explore how the act affects him psychologically in the long term, and that is one line Season 2 can follow.

Will Leo be haunted by guilt, or will he attempt to suppress it, as the rest of the Lasserres attempt to conceal their secrets? His fate, both emotionally and ethically, is prepared for anything.

3. What is Nadia going to do with her new status as mistress of the mansion in Under a Dark Sun?

Nadia's return is one of the most symbolic and surprising plot twists at the season's end. Driven out and disowned by the Lasserres, Alba's mother returns to reclaim the estate after her extended period of exile. The step seems a gesture of atonement, but the series doesn't quite specify how Nadia will use her re-established authority.

Will it be to begin anew, erase the poisonous legacy of the Lasserres, or re-establish her brand of tyranny? Nadia is the most mysterious of all the series' characters, and returning means her tale is very far from complete.

4. Will Beatrice recover her memory, and what will be the consequences in Under a Dark Sun?

Arnaud's wife, Beatrice, cheats death in an assassination attempt at a psychiatric clinic but is left without any memory. She's been left physically and psychologically battered after the series. Although she cannot get involved at present with her illness, any later recall would upset everybody's life.

Beatrice knows the majority of the worst of the family's secrets, and if she remembers anything about Manon, Arnaud's death, or the behind-the-scenes of the estate's affairs, she could blow the well-constructed cover-up story Alba and Manon created.

5. Did Alba finally break the cycle, or is she merely beginning hers in Under a Dark Sun?

Alba leaves the estate at season's end with Leo in tow and the burden of a myriad of secrets on her shoulders. It appears from the series that she's beginning anew, one wherein she no longer stands hostage to the manipulation and violence that had characterized her family tradition. But is it possible that anyone can leave so much psychic trash behind?

Alba is a partner in a grand cover-up and is inextricably bound to a family whose sins are generational. Season 2 could be whether Alba finds peace or gets stuck in the same cycle she was fighting.

Under a Dark Sun is neither a dystopian nor a sci-fi thriller; it's a realistic family drama with complex characters embedded in deception, power, and survival. Season 1 answers some of the immediate questions, mainly who killed Arnaud and what is shifting in the Lasserre family dynamics. It raises some of the moral and ethical issues to be addressed in Season 2, though.

Whether or not the truth finally gets to Manon, Leo finds peace, or Nadia changes the history of the family, those are yet to be seen. Until then, the shadow of the Lasserres hangs big over what is to be.
