Unsolved Mysteries features a case from December 1987, when a young Nebraska woman named Christi Jo Nichols went missing, leaving behind two children, a troubled marriage, and a lot of unanswered questions. At just 22 years old, Christi was already a mother of two and living with her husband, Mark Nichols.

On the surface, this may have looked like a typical life, but things were different inside the walls of their home. Christi’s case is especially sad and unsettling because there were several quiet warning signs before she went missing.

She had recently gone to the hospital for an injury that no one fully understood, had talked to a lawyer about getting a divorce, and told her close friends that she was scared of her husband. Then, out of nowhere, she disappeared.

Her husband said she left on her own, but the facts don’t back up his story. Even after lots of news coverage, public appeals from her family, and being featured on the show Unsolved Mysteries, no one knows what truly happened to her.

Keep reading to learn more about this haunting case of the young woman.

As revealed in the Unsolved Mysteries episode, Christi Jo Nichols was a quiet and gentle woman who cared a lot about her children. Her friends and family remember that she didn’t always talk about her feelings, but they could tell she was hurting.

A few days before she disappeared, she went to the hospital because of a hurt thumb. She said it was an accident, but the doctors and nurses noticed that she seemed scared and unsure, which made them wonder if someone had hurt her.

Around the same time, Christi also met with a divorce lawyer. The Unsolved Mysteries episode explained that she told the lawyer that she wanted to leave her husband, Mark, and was hoping to get custody of their children.

The lawyer who met Christi noticed she was struggling both emotionally and physically. The lawyer said:

"We do a lot of divorce work. We’ve handled hundreds of divorces. But she had to rank up in the top five of being very distressed and upset and nervous and needing help..."

She had bruises that could be seen, and she looked very scared. Christi had also told some people that she was afraid of what her husband, Mark, might do if she tried to leave him.

Even though she was scared, Christi was trying to make small changes to protect herself and find a safer life. Unfortunately, those efforts stopped suddenly on December 11, 1987, the day she went missing.

On the evening of December 10, 1987, Christi and her husband Mark reportedly went out after arranging for a babysitter to watch their children. The babysitter shared:

"When I babysat the night that she disappeared, I was surprised that the both of them were going out, because I knew they weren’t getting along."

Mark said that when they got back home, Christi went to bed as usual. But when he woke up early the next morning, she was missing. He said she had left on her own, taking a suitcase with her, but strangely leaving her car behind. Many people found his story hard to believe because Christi had never abandoned her kids before.

In fact, she had been planning to stay and fight for custody, not run away and leave her children behind. When the police investigated further, they found some worrying clues. Blood was discovered in the bedroom and also in the trunk of Mark’s car.

Tests later confirmed that the blood belonged to Christi. Mark said the blood was just from her period, but the test results showed that wasn’t true. Even though this evidence looked suspicious, it wasn’t strong enough for the police to arrest him.

After some time, Mark filed for divorce, saying Christi had deserted him, and then he moved to another state. Up to now, he has never been charged with any crime related to Christi’s disappearance.

As revealed in the Unsolved Mysteries episode, many ideas have been suggested about what might have happened to Christi. Some people think her body could be hidden somewhere, like a construction site or buried under concrete.

But no one has ever found any proof or signs of her. The police still believe this is a murder case and consider Mark Nichols, her husband, the main suspect. However, no one has been arrested for it yet.
