Netflix revived a 1987 show covering true crime stories and mysterious deaths in a modern-day documentary-style format—Unsolved Mysteries (2020). The show was appreciated for its in-depth exploration of cases and intriguing way of storytelling, and one of the most chilling cases featured in the show was the murder case of JonBenét Ramsey.
JonBenét was six years old at the time of the attack, and had gained national attention for being a child beauty queen, but was later kidnapped and murdered. Her body was found in the basement of the house. But the catch is that even after 30 years, the case remains unsolved.
Read on to know the details of this chilling case.
Unsolved Mysteries: Who was JonBenét Ramsey?
It was Atlanta, Georgia, where JonBenét was born on August 6, 1990. However, when the family relocated to Boulder, Colorado, JonBenét enrolled in kindergarten at High Peaks Elementary School and further competed in the child beauty pageant competition, which resulted in her being famous. It is speculated that this recognition might be something that drew the attention of the attackers to the child.
JonBenét Patricia Ramsey was her full name, being the younger of two children of Patricia "Patsy" and John Bennett Ramsey. During the pageant competition, she was praised for her poised performances and elaborate costumes.
On 1996 December 26, her name hit the headlines when the little girl was found dead in her Boulder, Colorado home. JonBenét's case has captured public attention for nearly three decades. Nearly 28 years later, it remains one of the most infamous unsolved cases in the U.S., and the case continues to draw public interest and renewed investigative efforts.
The case has again gained momentum after the Recent advancements in DNA technology. Despite the investigators reaching nowhere in the investigation, Jon Benet's father, John, continues to advocate for justice and urges the authorities to use the latest forensic tools to find the culprit.
“We're begging the police to engage,” he told PEOPLE in November. “There are cutting-edge DNA labs that want to help and who believe they can move the case forward.”
However, no suspects have ever been charged in the case.
What happened to JonBenét Ramsey, as shown in Unsolved Mysteries?
On the date of the murder, Patsy found a note demanding a ransom of $118,000 if they wanted their daughter to return safely. This incident happened in the morning, while the parents found the dead body of their 6-year-old child later on the same day, in the basement of the home. The autopsy revealed she had died from asphyxia due to strangulation and a skull fracture.
The body was examined when the authorities found evidence of s*xual assault however, no semen was found. A garrote made from a paintbrush handle and nylon cord was used in the strangulation. DNA analysis confirmed the presence of some male DNA on the victim's clothes, but it did not match any known person, including family members.
"JonBenet's still my 6-year-old blond-headed daughter who I love dearly," John Ramsey told ABC News. "I did run into one of her little friends on the street who is now, you know, 30 and an adult. And it was, it was a little bit of a shock. This little girl played with JonBenet at our house all the time. And that was a little bit of a jolt to think, wow, that could have been JonBenet."
The investigation faced numerous challenges, including a mishandled crime scene and media frenzy, as shown in Unsolved Mysteries. Even the authorities suspected JonBenét's family, particularly her parents, but they were later cleared through DNA testing in 2008. Over the years, various theories and suspects have emerged, including Michael Helgoth, whose boot print was found near the crime scene, but he died by suicide in 1997 when police said they had almost caught the suspect.
John Mark Karr falsely confessed to the crime, but his family confirmed he was not in Colorado at the time. Moreover, his DNA did not match. Then came Gary Oliva, a convicted s*x offender with an alleged obsession with JonBenét, but even he came out clean after the DNA test, as shown in the Netflix show Unsolved Mysteries.
