Netflix’s new thriller Untamed follows a murder investigation set in the wilderness of Yosemite. The show features Wilson Bethel as Shane Maguire, a Wildlife Management Officer. His storyline ends in the final episode, leaving no scope for his return.
In an interview with Collider, Bethel confirmed there is no chance of his character returning in any future seasons of Untamed. When asked if Shane could survive, Bethel said,
“There’s a pretty solid case to be made that there will be no Shane Maguire in future episodes of Untamed.”
Bethel also talked about his character’s moral views, the nature of shooting action scenes, and how the ending confirmed Shane Maguire’s fate. He further explained why there was no chance of survival for Shane after the events in the last episode. Bethel’s comments have closed any speculation about Shane coming back for another season.
Wilson Bethel explains Shane Maguire’s moral code
Wilson Bethel explained his approach to playing Shane Maguire in Untamed. He described Shane as a person who believed in his own moral clarity. In Bethel’s words,
“From his own perspective, he is so morally clear.”

He said Shane had a fixed idea of what was right and wrong, which made him justify extreme actions like murder. Bethel said,
“It’s about him knowing in his bones, for himself, that this is the right thing.”
He shared that Shane believed he lived a righteous life. He explained that Shane lived a simple life, enjoyed nature, and followed his own set of rules.
Shane was shown living in the wilderness and returning to civilization from time to time. Bethel said,
“He prizes this view he has of himself as a survivalist who can live with nothing, but at the same time, occasionally avails himself of some of the perks of civilization.”
Bethel called Shane a “real lone wolf” and explained that he was comfortable being by himself but also enjoyed moments of social life.
The final confrontation and why Shane could not return
Wilson Bethel talked about the final episode of Untamed and confirmed Shane Maguire’s ending. In the show’s last episodes, Shane hunted Kyle Turner, played by Eric Bana. Shane killed Kyle’s horse, which Bethel said removed any chance of survival or sympathy for his character.
When asked about this scene, Bethel said,
“I don’t think we spend a lot of time trying to garner sympathy for Shane Maguire.”

Bethel admitted Shane followed his moral code even in difficult situations. He said,
“For him, maybe he doesn’t like the idea, in theory, of shooting a horse, but that’s just a thing that had to be done.”
Bethel openly said there was no future for Shane in Untamed. His exact words were,
“There’s a pretty solid case to be made that there will be no Shane Maguire in future episodes of Untamed.”
He made it clear Shane’s story was finished and there was no way back for his character.
Wilson Bethel’s reflections on Untamed shooting experience
Wilson Bethel also talked about his overall experience while filming Untamed. He shared that the natural location was a big reason for his interest in the project. He said,
“It was one of the things that stood out to me from the beginning.”
Bethel enjoyed acting outdoors and said,
“To be outside in some of the most beautiful, extraordinary nature on the planet and getting paid to do it… it was just a total dream.”
He also talked about action scenes, saying he enjoyed doing the confrontation scenes with Eric Bana. He said,
“It was very fun.”
About shooting the final fight, Bethel mentioned his family was nearby watching from a hotel balcony. Bethel confirmed he had experience handling weapons in other roles. He said,
“I have had experience, in past work that I’ve done, working with weapons.”
When asked if Shane would have killed Kyle had Naya not intervened, Bethel answered,
“A hundred percent.”
He confirmed Shane was fully prepared to kill Kyle and there was no hesitation.
In a nutshell, Wilson Bethel confirmed Shane Maguire will not return in a possible Untamed Season 2.
