Netflix's limited series, Untamed, ventures into the unexplored American national parks and mysteries that lurk within them. The father-daughter duo, Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith, created this character-driven murder mystery thriller, which follows Kyle Turner, an investigative agent for the National Park Service, as he investigates a murder that took place in Yosemite National Park.
However, Kyle is driven by more than just his morals and ethics as he tries to solve the murder case. Kyle's son Caleb was abducted and killed in the Yosemite National Park many years ago, and Kyle struggles with grief and guilt over his inability to protect his family. Night after night on Untamed, the voices from the lake, where Caleb's body was found, assaulted Kyle.
Kyle's guilt and grief made him want to drown himself in the same lake so that he could finally reunite with his child and free himself of the weight he had been carrying for so long. However, throughout the investigation in Untamed, changes can be seen in Kyle, freeing him from the grief and guilt that governed him for so long.
Kyle was struggling after Caleb's death in Untamed
Kyle and his ex-wife Jill's son, Caleb, was in the park with a children's group when he was separated and lost in the woods. It wasn't until two days later that Kyle found his son's body floating in the lake. He struggled with Caleb's death and the loss of his family, which deeply affected him. He would spend most of his nights near the lake where Caleb was found and would consider drowning himself to be free of all the pain and suffering.

Kyle struggled with the grief of losing his child, which was made worse by the fact that, for the longest time, he and Jill didn't know how Caleb had died. It wasn't until Shane Maguire, the park's wildlife management officer in Untamed, revealed the footage his motion-sensor camera had recorded of Caleb that they understood who killed their son. It is revealed on Untamed that when Kyle got lost in the woods, a man named Sean Sanderson abducted and s*xually assaulted him, after which he killed the little boy.
Sean urged the couple to allow him to kill their child's killer, but Kyle, being a man of honor and law, wanted to collect proof against Sean and make him face the repercussions of his actions. His then-wife Jill, however, didn't want to wait that long or watch the case be dragged out in court. She wanted to take action herself, so she hired Shane to kill Sean without telling Kyle.

When Kyle discovered that Sean was missing, after his parents reported it, he connected the dots and understood that his wife was responsible for another man's death. Kyle understood her reasons behind such a step, so he took the case and made sure that Sean's death could not be traced back to his wife.
However, as a man of ethics and honor, he could never forgive Jill for going behind his back and taking the law into her own hands. Their marriage fell apart after Jill's betrayal.
Kyle had to break the law to hide Jill's crimes and to protect her, but the shame of going back on his morals tortured him. It wasn't until Caleb wrapped up another little child, Lucy Cook's murder case, that he found some solace. Lucy's murder investigation, as well as Kyle's interactions with Vasquez's son, Gael, brought a change in Kyle. He returned to the lake, but he did not want to drown himself anymore. He wanted to stay alive and keep the memories and the spirit of his son alive in himself.
