Upload Season 3 premiered in October 2023 and ended on a major cliffhanger, setting up intense stakes for Season 4.

The new season is about to drop on Monday, August 25, 2025, which will also be its final season, following Amazon's original plan to complete the story in a four-season arc. In season 3, the story escalates dramatically when a sentient AI turns evil, threatening both Lakeview's digital afterlife and the real world.

This time in season 4, Nathan, Nora, and the company must join forces for one last time to stop the digital apocalypse. While season 3 had left the fate of the characters unresolved, the relationships and corporate conspiracies will all prime up for a closure in the final episode.

Here is the entire season 3 recap for you to read ahead of the release of season 4.

Here is what happened in season 3 of Upload

The real Nathan chooses Nora and plans a romantic getaway to Montreal, where he decides to propose to her. While the Backup Nathan chooses Ingrid, and after some emotional turmoil, she accepts his proposal. Therefore, the show seems to carve out separate but happy futures for both versions of Nathan.

Ingrid accidentally exposes the existence of two Nathans during her testimony. Meanwhile, Horizen realises that it's not only Nathan who has a duplicate, but many other clients have their copies as well. To cover up liability and protect profits, Horizen launches a purge by sending the agents to delete or destroy all backups.

The Backup Nathan is directly seized by Horizen's CEO inside the digital afterlife, which further makes him a corporate hostage. On the other hand, Real Nathan, the downloaded one, is grabbed by agents in the real world, while he and Nora were trying to escape. This conflict involving both the Nathans builds the final cliffhanger.

Nora’s dream of a fresh start with the “real” Nathan is crushed, while Ingrid, who accepted her reality with the backup Nathan, also lost him immediately. Both women are in a position where they must fight Horizen to save their men.

The Freeyond scam in Upload season 3, explored

The season also reveals who orders Nathan's kidnapping, and it is David Choak, an ultra-rich oligarch, and Oliver Kannerman, Ingrid’s father. The motive is to secure Nathan's code for Freeyond, then eliminate him to tie up loose ends.

The freeyond is a scam which claims to offer a "free afterlife for the poor." But in reality, it's just a tool to remove poor voters from society by scanning them and destroying their bodies without actually uploading them ever.

Choak & Kannerman’s plan wasn’t just about elections; it was to replace employees with compliant uploads, the corporate-owned labour. Several company employees are unethically working for the goal, like Karina Silva kidnaps Nora to manipulate her and make her believe that she was uploaded. Holden, Nathan, and Nora had gathered some evidence to bring Freeyond's crimes to light. They fight legally, but Nathan and Nora never get their uploading rights back.

Therefore, Horizen still owns the thoughts and memories of every upload. Dr. Kapoor, bribed by Horizen, sabotaged Nathan’s first download attempt to prevent clients from escaping their system. Nathan & Nora won a battle, but not the war, leaving Season 4 to address corporate ownership of consciousness head-on.
