American actress Uzo Aduba bagged an Emmy nomination at the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards for her role as Detective Cordelia Cupp in Netflix's mystery comedy series The Residence.
As announced by hosts Brenda Song and Harvey Guillén, Aduba was one of the actresses to be nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy series for the 2025 series.
The Residence also stars Giancarlo Esposito, Randall Park, Molly Griggs, and is created by Paul William Davies (Scandal) via Shonda Rhimes' Shondaland (Bridgerton).
While the White House murder mystery mainly received positive reviews from audiences and critics alike, even scoring 82% on RT, it was cancelled after one season in July 2025.
However, Uzo Aduba's eccentric performance as Cupp paired with her recent Emmy nomination proves that the show had potential and deserved more time.
More on this in our story.
The Residence: Uzo Aduba's Emmy Nomination proves that her mystery comedy deserved a second season
While fans and critics had rightly predicted the nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress (comedy) in the 77th Primetime Emmy awards, including Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), debutant Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This) and Jean Smart (Hacks), Aduba's Emmy Nomination was surely surprising.
While the actress has previously proved her acting chops and nailed her role of Cordelia Cupp in The Residence, the show was earlier cancelled by Netflix, which makes this nomination a bit surprising (but much-deserving).
Netflix, the streamer that has become infamously synonymous with cancelling good shows, silently axed Uzo Aduba's mystery-comedy series after just one season, despite the show having much potential to become a successful anthology series.
Like Sherlock Holmes, Cordelia Cupp had all the characteristics of becoming a famous fictional detective and Aduba's performance alone was deserving of another season, proven by her recent Emmy nomination for the role.
Davies even had plans to develop The Residence beyond a season and into an anthology series, with Cupp taking on a new case each season, with her signature mix of dry humour and acute observational skills. However, Uzo Aduba's show was axed too soon and Cupp will not grace our screens with another appearance.
A look back at Uzo Aduba's career as she bags an Emmy nomination for The Residence
Uzo Aduba is most famously known for her role as Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren in Netflix's 2013 series Orange Is the New Black. Her role even won her two Emmy awards, including the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014 and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2015.
In addition to these two Emmys, Aduba is one of only two actors to win two Emmys in both Comedy and Drama genres for the same show, after actor Ed Asner.
Her success with Orange Is the New Black also secured her a role in Hulu miniseries Mrs. America in 2020, opposite Cate Blanchett and Sarah Paulson. Uzo Aduba played the role of real-life politician Shirley Chisholm, which again won her a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
In recent years, Aduba has starred in Netflix's miniseries Piankiller, animated series Ada Twist, Scientist and has also voiced in Netflix's nature documentary titled Animal.
In addition, some of her earlier projects include Saturday Night Live, Blue Bloods, Comedy Bang! Bang! and In Treatment.
