Daredevil: Born Again features many characters from the original Daredevil series, and Wilson Fisk is a villain who had to be brought back, and he was. Played by Vincent D'Onofrio, the character is a mafia lord who becomes the mayor of New York City in Daredevil: Born Again.
In MCU films and shows, most characters resemble their comic counterpart closely. But one fan on X expressed that he feels that Wilson Fisk got nerfed in Daredevil: Born Again. Vincent D'Onofrio responded to the comment, saying he disagreed, and his conversation with the fan reflected how passionate the actor is about his role.

Vincent D'Onofrio does not think Kingpin was nerfed in Daredevil: Born Again
Vincent D'Onofrio first played the Kingpin in Netflix's Daredevil and then joined the MCU in Hawkeye. He also played the character in Echo and Daredevil: Born Again. D'Onofrio has played the character like it should be played, portraying Fisk's brutality and cunningness as portrayed in the comics. However, as everyone is allowed to have an opinion, a fan (@TContrapasso) wrote on X,
Wilson Fisk got nerfed like the Hulk. Not your fault Disney didn’t rehire the writers from the Netflix show. Hope Season 2 returns to what made the Netflix show so damn good. But Disney has a track record of ruining reboots.
Vincent D'Onofrio responded to this, saying,
"I have to say i disagree with all that you say. To be honest my performances have been called many things but never nerfed. Lol. Yet i don't play the part just for you and you don't watch tv just for me. So we are even and i accept your criticism. No matter the lack of good sportsmanship, fairness and legitimacy."
The actor pointed out something important: not everything in a show will please everyone, and not every viewer has to like everything about a show. D'Onofrio accepted the criticism while kindly disagreeing. The fan further said, replying to D'Onofrio,
"It’s not your performance at all
It’s the writing of your character
Disney Fisk is weak
Netflix Fisk would never have a guy locked in cage. Fisk would’ve k!lled him, his family, friends, and coworkers
Netflix writing of Fisk is far and away superior over BA"
The fan wanted to make it clear that it's the writing that he does not agree with, not D'Onofrio's portrayal, and how he feels Netflix wrote the character better. However, D'Onofrio pointed out something very important, saying,
"I control my characters performance. You are a bit green when it comes to your knowledge on making a show. The detail, the writing, the technologies and the overall structure and architecture in laying out the storyline and executing performances. You keep saying it's the writing that is the problem. You may not like it. Many do though. We can't please everyone but we can please millions and they've said so. Our fans are very loud. Lets say i were you and i hated the portrayal of kingpin as much as you do. I'd stay away from it. I'd champion storytelling that i love instead of dragging writers and someone's performance."
D'Onofrio, along with Charlie Cox (who plays Matt Murdock in Daredevil: Born Again), is very much involved in how their characters are written. He points out that not everything on the show can be made to suit everyone's needs. He also suggests that the fan focuses on what he likes over what he does not. D'Onofrio continues,
"As an actor i fail in my eyes everyday and also in my past work many times but i keep trying to get it right. All creative types have that in common. What we don't do is try and ruin millions of others fun when we don't like a piece. Instead we champion the stuff we do like and become inspired by it. Try it. It makes life so much more sustainable and yes, inspiring."
The fan understood what D'Onofrio was trying to convey, still maintained some of his views, but appreciated the conversation, saying,
"Fair point to me not knowing how to make a show. “Nerfing” is not about your performance, as I said, but about a downgrade of Wilson Fisk (ie the Hulk in Endgame is a “nerf” compared to the first Avengers). But, I digress, and I appreciate you conversing with a regular guy."
Wilson Fisk is not less powerful or 'nerfed' in Daredevil: Born Again. He is indeed more careful and clever this time since he has a political reputation to preserve, but we see him more in action in the Disney show, especially when he crushes Commissioner Gallo's skull. Disney's Kingpin has evolved with time, but as D'Onofrio points out, the character has not been nerfed.
Daredevil: Born Again is now streaming on Disney+.
