ABC's The Rookie just got even better- Deric Augustine's character, Miles Penn, is now a series regular, as reported by Deadline. Introduced in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 1, The Shot, Deric Augustine's Miles Penn was initially teased as a recurring character. However, due to his standout performance, plot requirement, and growing fan response, he was roped in as a series regular.

The Rookie has tossed plenty of fresh-faced officers over these seven seasons. While some were able to stick, others were not up to mark and hence were written off. But Deric Augustine's Miles Penn? This guy's different- and since ABC has locked him as a series regular, the show might have found its new interesting character.

The Rookie Season 7: Meet Miles Penn- not your typical Rookie

Miles Penn isn't some wide-eyed kid straight out of the academy. He's a 20-something-year-old transfer from Texas with two years of experience. Much unlike the typical newbie rookie of the LAPD. Miles, a former college football champion whose career was wrecked due to an injury, was living in his car when he came to L.A. He's quite different from other rookies- he's confident, clever, and most importantly, not afraid to bend the rules.

Tim Bradford isn't an easy-to-please officer, he's a strict and no-nonsense cop. The viewers have seen how tough he was with Lucy Chen during the training. In The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13, Tim praised his mentee, Miles,

"You are a good cop, Texas or at least you will be when I'm done with you. Look when you blew out your name, you could have grabbed on AJ's coattails but you didn't. You want to be your own man so don't go wasting talent taking the easy road."

It was a real deal indeed! Even though they started on a rough note, Bradford slowly understood Miles Penn's determination and potential. Honestly, it's quite refreshing to watch this as a fresh mentor-mentee bond as both of them have quite stubborn personalities- Tough love mixed and brutal honesty.

The moment Miles Penn proved he's here to stay

The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13, titled Three Billboards, started with somebody trying to defame the LAPD, especially John Nolan, by putting up disturbing billboards all across the city. During an investigation in the episode, Miles reconnected with his famous footballer friend, AJ Knox (Justin Cornwell). As the team solved the crime, AJ Knox offered Miles a six-figure salary job- a golden ticket for Miles to opt out of the life-risking cop work. However, Miles turned down the offer and walked away. This proved that he was quite content and satisfied with being a cop. This pivotal moment of The Rookie established Miles Penn as a main regular character of the series.

Miles Penn isn't just a good cop, but he wants to challenge and change the system from within. He's not like other rookies who simply love to obey their superior's orders. He's a cop who questions outdated rules, pushes for reform, and brings a fresh perspective to LAPD. For instance, in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 14, Mad About Murder, when Miles attended Detective Nyla Harper's meeting on police reform, he found out that the training videos of the academy were outdated and cringeworthy. He suggested to Harper that the videos were inappropriate, and thus, he got the chance to revamp the department's outdated training videos. This kind of initiative makes one think that Miles Penn does have the potential to run the LAPD office.

Howdy! Miles Penn, Badge No. 653031, is here to stay!
