Although bursts of “Jack Reacher” Season 4 might not arrive until 2025, fans don’t need to put their refreshing love for crime thrillers on timeout. While Jace Duster’s Jack Reacher gets ready for another action-packed blast of rough justice on Prime Video, HBO Max has stealthily released a series that strikes many of the same chords – and it is receiving accolades from critics.

Duster, a high-octane crime drama by Lost co-creator J. J. Abrams and writer-producer LaToya Morgan, foreshadows the penetrating tension, high-octane action, and morally ambiguous characters that fans of Reacher thrive on. It is being touted as the surprise breakout of the season with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 92% and a flourishing creative team.

Duster showcases an undercover deal gone wrong in the 70s America, with a daring getaway driver posing as a simple town woman. We bet you’re itching for some case-of-the-season bare knucke justice right now. If that is the case, the eight episodes of Duster will surely manage to hold you off.

In essence, it’s a crime show that’s played like clock work, injecting a peppy duo and retro flair into the traditional formula. While the double feature is busy captivating audiences with fresh from the oven world build and lore dumps, Reacher is still resting on the back :) But it sure looks like Duster is poised to outstrip expectations with solid early reviews.

Rachel Hilson stars as the FBI's first Black female agent, Nina Hayes, in Duster which takes place in 1972. Duster chronicles the life of Ezra Saxton (Keith David), a notorious crime boss, and his capture by Hayes. Alongside him, she partners with Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway)—a cynical former military driver. Together, they form Duster’s comedically and emotionally mismatched pair.

The show is polished with a stylish vibe, fast-paced action sequences, and character driven plotlines. Like Reacher, the violence is justified and personal, but violence is not the only focal point. Duster makes a mark with its period setting, mid-century America, which is full of grit, obscured modernity, and enhances the typical contemporary crime shows.

Reacher lovers and critics love it — and it’s just getting started

Despite having aired only a couple of episodes, Duster already has a remarkable score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes – the same rating Reacher season 1 received. Early praise has been aimed at the writing, pacing, and performance, especially the Hilson-Holloway chemistry. Like Reacher and Neagley, their dynamic humanizes all the chaos.

New episodes will air every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET until early July, following Reacher’s eight episode rollout. This places Duster as the replacement for the crime-action void. If you’re looking for the meticulous mayhem of Jack Reacher’s world, this character-centered, explosive thriller will more than make up for it.
