The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 has released three episodes to date, with a fourth one on the way for May 25, 2025. Dead City featured Maggie bringing Hershel back home after he was captured by the Burazi. She does this by exchanging Negan for her son in New York. Season 2, set a few months after the previous season, follows the events of Season 1 with Maggie returning to New York with the New Babylon Federation to bring Negan back.

Even though the events of the two seasons are connected, their filming locations are wildly different. Where Season 1 was actually filmed in New York, The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 was filmed in Boston, Massachusetts, and the towns surrounding it.

Here's what The Walking Dead: Dead City star Lauren Cohan had to say about this major difference in filming locations for the two seasons.

Lauren Cohan on the location change for The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2

After shooting Dead City Season 1 in New York, it appears the showrunners came to the conclusion that it would be much better and cheaper to shoot somewhere else instead of The Big Apple itself. Production for Season 2 of The Walking Dead: Dead City was then moved to Boston, Massachusetts, instead of New York.

Actor, producer, and director Cohan, in a conversation with Collider, revealed that this decision was made because of production design reasons. She explained that they wanted to use really iconic locations in New York, which would be on a very grand scale, but such locations weren't easily accessible as they were very expensive.

"We got so much more out of shooting in Boston. We really wanted iconic locations that would be representative of the grand scale of New York, and those are really expensive."

So, they made the decision to move to Boston instead of New York, as it gave them the chance to shoot in the iconic, large-scale locations that they wanted to shoot in without having to face the issues that they were facing in New York.

"We were able to find places to shoot in Boston that were stunning and that we had a lot of control and access to, and that allowed us to tell the show at a scale that befits the grandness of a New York story."

The decision to shift the filming location from New York to Boston was made to properly express the story on the scale it deserved, even if it meant that the creators had to sacrifice the iconic historical local locations of New York.

There won't be many recognizable historical iconic locations in the upcoming Season 2 episodes. However, since the main focus this season is the story and the characters, and there are so many iconic locations in Boston that the show has chosen for production, this won't take anything away from The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2.
