Initially, when Elgin arrived in the town, his demeanor was quite different from the one we see in From Season 3. It seems that after he begins to interact with the mysterious woman wearing a kimono, he changes completely. However, this change is not for the better.
In the series, we have seen Sara’s descent into a dangerous path when she began to follow the voices in her head. Similarly, Elgin is also being fooled and manipulated by the mysterious woman, and he has no knowledge of it. Rather, he thinks that his actions will eventually lead the townspeople to safety.
Was Elgin being fooled by the mysterious woman in From Season 3?
The frightening presence of the kimono lady initially disrupted Elgin's life. It reached the point where he stopped sleeping in hopes of avoiding her. However, things do not turn out well even after that. When Elgin finally decides to confront his fear of the mysterious woman, everything changes—especially him.

It all starts with the Polaroid photos. When Elgin clicked Fatima’s Polaroid photo, he saw that the mysterious woman appeared in it. Instead of recognizing the danger, he begins to follow her lead. The mysterious woman begins to manipulate Elgin to do the tasks that would eventually wreak havoc on the trapped townspeople.
Instead of understanding her motive, he began to believe that the mysterious woman had chosen him to lead the townspeople to safety. Just like how the voices in Sara’s head manipulated her to kill, similarly, Elgin is also being manipulated and fooled by the kimono lady.
His actions in From Season 3 truly prove the extent the mysterious being from the series can manipulate a person. The mysterious woman in From Season 3 is just another scary apparition that Elgin does not understand. Her influence grows as time passes, and it leads to some questionable actions on Elgin’s side.
He does not think twice before putting Fatima into a difficult situation. Just because of the mysterious woman’s words, he makes sure Fatima goes through with giving birth to the baby, which he thinks would be a key to the path of their success. He keeps Fatima locked up after kidnapping her and then makes her drink blood.
When Boyd and Ellis were desperately searching for Fatima, he lied to them. His actions eventually led to a dangerous consequence. Elgin is tortured by Boyd and then Sara, Fatima gives birth to the Smiley monster, and the complications rise instead of being solved.
Fatima giving birth to the Smiley monster was proof that Elgin was being fooled by the kimono-clad mysterious woman all along. Fatima was just the vessel to carry forward the evil.
The smiley monster’s arrival also shows that the monsters could come back after dying. Elgin’s story serves as a cautionary tale. The deep psychological horrors that the mysterious forces of the town are capable of are proven through Elgin’s manipulation in From Season 3.
