Throughout its two seasons, Shrinking on Apple TV+ proved to be a fresh sitcom centered around themes of mental health and emotional wellbeing. Shrinking features the characters of Jimmy, played by Jason Segel, and his boss, Paul, played by veteran actor Harrison Ford.
Temperamentally, both of them are poles apart when it comes to treating patients on Shrinking. While Paul knows and values the importance of establishing boundaries with his clientale, Jimmy often jumps right in to attend to the woes of his patients even at the cost of his own pre-occupations in life.
Here's everything that you need to know.
Jimmy often gives too much attention to his patients on Shrinking
The second season of Shrinking provided certain revealing insights about Paul being the right one and Jimmy being the wrong one in the context of having a suitable work-life balance. Whereas Paul enforces a strict sense of boundaries with his patients, Jimmy seemingly can't do so to his disadvantage, and does not know how to convince his patients to maintain a sort of decorum when it comes to venting themselves.
The second season episode, titled I Love Pain, was a perfect illustration of this trope when one of Jimmy's patients — Sean — sends a long and exhaustive essay to Paul about his feelings. Sean actually lived with Jimmy, and was used to having him as a therapist at hand so that he could talk to him whenever he wanted to, and for however long he wanted. Upon receiving the essay, Paul didn't jump right into it like Jimmy and further the cycle of Sean's dependance, but told him rather curtly to use the tools learned from their previous session.
Jason Segel speaks about the finale of Shrinking Season 2
Following the riveting second season finale of the Apple TV+ show, Jason Segel spoke in an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, sharing his insights for the show's sophomore season. Asked about the experience of acting with Harrison Ford, Segel remarked:
"Harrison is my friend, man. It’s really crazy, and he’s my contemporary. I just feel honored to do these scenes with him, and he does something very generous. Very early on in season one, he just tries to break through any sense of awe that he knows you probably have towards him and just wants to make great work. So I go into these scenes like, like I’m playing one-on-one basketball with Michael Jordan, or something, like I better, I better bring my A-game. I also am allowed to marvel when he goes full Harrison, and I’m like, “Oh, there he is, in all his glory.” So I feel really lucky. I try not to be too much of a spectator when we’re doing these scenes. But it’s a little tricky sometimes."
Both seasons of Shrinking are available for streaming exclusively on Apple TV+.
