The Office premiered in 2005, and despite the finale airing in 2013, the show has remained a fan favorite and has gained a cult status. Sticking to the sitcom trope, The Office featured a bunch of guest cast members who starred in one or two episodes. One of the many guest appearances in the show featured Josh Groban, who appeared in two episodes.
Groban appeared in the episodes Garden Party and The Boat. He portrayed the role of Andy’s brother, Walter Bernard, Jr., in the episodes and had a substantial part in Garden Party. Groban was asked on Twitter whether he would be interested in a role by Mindy Kaling, and eventually he starred in two episodes.
Josh Groban guest starred as Andy’s brother in The Office
Josh Groban played the role of Walter Bernard, Jr., Andy’s brother, and starred for two episodes in The Office. His character is shown to be a little better than Andy in all aspects of life, like singing or even getting the approval of their father. Talking about his role and character, Groban told Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey on the Office Ladies podcast,
“He's like this super talented golden retriever that just, like, doesn't know; one of the things that really made that dynamic really adorable and really fun.”
Besides liking the character he portrayed, Groban also felt that he was lucky enough to get the role. In the same podcast, he said,
“Sometimes when you make a guest appearance on a show, you're doing it with one person or two or two people from the show and you're part of like a little arc that doesn't involve other people in the cast.”
He further added,
“And so to be part of a 'everybody together doing a party' scene meant that, as a fanboy of the show, I got to sit and just be around like the entire cast for the entirety of the day.”
The episode Garden Party focused on Andy’s attempts to win his parents', especially his father's, approval as he throws a garden party at Schrute Farms. He explains the party rules to everyone attending, and when he makes a toast to Robert, expecting that people will then toast to him and prove how valuable an employee he is, his plan backfires and he ends up getting roasted instead.
While he tries to salvage the situation by attempting a song with his father, that plan also fails, and again, his brother Walter Bernard, Jr., ends up taking the spotlight. The episode highlighted Groban’s character as an adorable person and stood in contrast to Andy, who was trying too hard, which made it an interesting watch.
The Office can be streamed on Netflix.
