Rolling back through the pages of time to May 5, 2019, we land in Winterfell, a kingdom to the north of Westeros (an imaginary realm), as seen in HBO's classic fantasy adaptation Game of Thrones. The Seven Kingdoms have just faced the most dangerous threat that people can ever witness—the White Walkers, a unique form of zombies.
While provinces to the far south of the Wall still remain away from the direct effect of the deadly creatures' winterly emergence, the situation in the north (Winterfell) is quite grim. Thousands of lives have been lost while battling against the almost-unstoppable White Walkers, but thanks to Arya Stark's sheer bravery and presence of mind, the fight is won in the blink of an eye (she kills the Night King using a dagger made from Valyrian steel).
However, as the survivors gather in Winterfell's Great Hall in memory of all the deceased soldiers, Queen Daenerys is seen seated at the table with the other Starks, and right there in front of her, viewers witness a disposable coffee cup. How such a modern thing landed in what appears to be an early medieval era in an imaginary world immediately bothered the fans until the mistake was addressed by HBO themselves, mentioning:
"T he latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake."
The coffee cup scene in Game of Thrones Season 8 was a legitimate mistake
Back in 2019, an official statement came from HBO officials where it was mentioned that the coffee cup scene was a legitimate mistake. Emilia Clarke, who plays Queen Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones:
"Had ordered an herbal tea."
However, there have been a lot of memes and harmless jokes going around the social media ever since Daenerys appeared on screen with a Starbucks coffee cup while the people of Winterfell had gathered around for a feast. Later in October 2019, Clarke herself appeared on The Tonight Show, where she clarified what actually happened that led to such an on-set blunder.
According to her statement at that time, the cup actually belonged to Conleth Hill, who portrayed the role of Lord Varys in Game of Thrones. However, it was a legitimate on-set error that it was not removed before the scene was shot.
To quote her exact words:
"Here’s the truth: We had a party before the Emmys recently and Conleth Hill, who plays Varys — who’s sitting next to me in that scene — he pulls me aside and he’s like, ‘Emilia, I have got to tell you something, love. The coffee cup was mine.'"
But when Clarke's co-star Sophie Turner (who plays Sansa Stark in GOT) was earlier asked about the same sequence, she had jokingly passed the blame to Emilia Clarke, saying:
"I mean, look who it's place in front of."
After all the amusing exchanges and bloopers, HBO made it official that it was an error while filming and editing. And it's also worth mentioning how keen the fans were to have noticed such a small detail. However, it still remains as a funny part of what has been, for a long time, a huge and much-loved franchise.
