Washington Black recently premiered on Hulu and is already getting rave reviews for its intense storyline and enchanting performances. The period drama is set in the 1800s and revolves around the titular hero who escapes slavery and builds his life despite severe challenges.
Played by Ernest Kingsley Jr., George Washington 'Wash' Black flees from the sugar plantation fields in Barbados as a child and is later helped by a Black refugee named Medwin Harris, played by Sterling K. Brown.

The show is based on Esi Edugyan’s 2018 novel of the same name. It stars Ernest Kingsley Jr. as George Washington 'Wash' Black, along with Sterling K. Brown as Medwin Harris, Tom Ellis as Christopher 'Titch' Wilde, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Miss Angie, Iola Evans as Tanna Goff, Rupert Graves as Mr. Goff, Edward Bluemel as Billy McGee, and Eddie Karanja as young Wash. The official synopsis of the series reads:
“[The show] follows the 19th-century odyssey of George Washington ‘Wash’ Black, an 11-year-old boy born on a Barbados sugar plantation, whose prodigious scientific mind sets him on a path of unexpected destiny.”
