Netflix's thriller series, Wayward, was released on September 25.

It follows Leila and Abbie, two teenagers who are admitted to Tall Pines Academy. They try to escape the school, and Alex Dempsey, a new police officer in town, helps them.

Wayward portrays the dark secrets of Tall Pines, a fictional town in Vermont, and episode 3 of the show, Break, tells us more about the strange things taking place there.

Let's revisit the episode and find out what it revealed.

Wayward Episode 3 recap

Episode 3 of Wayward begins with Laura (played by Sarah Gadon) dreaming. In the dream, we see her walk through the woods with Alex (played by Mae Martin). They are seen talking, and during their conversation, Alex wonders if they would have been friends when they were younger, and Laura jokes that she probably would have led him astray.

Their peaceful moment ends when Laura’s parents appear and pull her away in a car, leaving Alex behind.

Next, we see Evelyn (played by Toni Collette) meet Leila’s (played by Alyvia Alyn Lind) mother to convince her to keep Leila enrolled. Since Leila’s family cannot afford the fees, Evelyn pressures her mother into mortgaging the house, threatening to involve the police if she refuses.

Leila is angry about being forced to stay, but Evelyn insists that it will help her change into a better version of herself. Leila later finds Abbie (played by Sydney Topliffe) and suggests they escape the academy. Abbie disagrees, believing it’s smarter to follow the school’s rules until they reach the Break phase, where students gain more freedom, and Leila reluctantly agrees to wait.

Meanwhile, Alex adjusts to his desk job at the police station. He finds the work dull, but while entering data, he discovers files connected to Tall Pines Academy. His curiosity grows as he secretly examines them. This is a turning point in Wayward, as Alex is learning more about the academy.

At school, Leila meets a new student named Rory (played by John Daniel), who is talkative but avoids revealing too much since discussing the outside world is forbidden. Despite that rule, Leila feels that he’s hiding something. Later, Abbie tells Leila about a former student named Riley who managed to escape, giving Leila hope that they might also find a way out.

Back at the station, Alex shares what he found with Dwayne (played by Brandon Jay McLaren). Dwayne explains that children have been disappearing from Tall Pines since 1993 and that many have never returned. Some, he adds, simply choose not to be found once they turn eighteen.

Evelyn later holds a group session known as the “hot seat,” where students expose each other’s weaknesses. The exercise turns hostile, and Rory breaks down after being taunted about his family. Evelyn ends the session by forcing the group into a group hug, which shows how much she controls everything at the academy.

Alex visits Tall Pines, where Rabbit (played by Tattiawna Jones) offers to show him around the dormitories. At the same time, Leila and Abbie locate a hidden door in the basement that leads to a CCTV room. They spot Alex outside and try to reach him, but the guards catch them. Alex helps them by secretly passing Abbie a phone before they are taken back.

The episode ends with Laura having disturbing nightmares and Leila being placed in the mirror room, where Evelyn tells her that the only escape lies through a door. In the final moments of the episode, Abbie hides in a bathroom and calls Alex for help, leaving the episode on a cliffhanger. Wayward Episode 3 deepens the mystery surrounding Tall Pines Academy and shows how Alex’s investigation draws him closer to uncovering the truth behind the academy and helping Abbie and Leila.

Wayward is streaming on Netflix.
