Asajj Ventress came back to life in Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, which was released on May 5, 2025, in the USA. This is more than just another “back from the dead” moment. It features one of the most compelling arcs in the Star Wars galaxy. Ventress last appeared before The Bad Batch was in the novel Dark Disciple, based on unproduced Clone Wars scripts. According to the storyline, she sacrifices herself to save Quinlan Vos.

Tales of the Underworld confirms that Mother Talzin and the spirits of the Nightsisters resurrected Ventress. She was given a choice: remain with her fallen sisters in the spirit realm, or return to the living. Fans believed that she was dead, but she returned using the established magical lore. Her return was not just random but also gave her a purpose beyond just being back.

But there is indeed more to this story, and we finally know who brought her back to life in Star Wars. It was Quinlan Vos's last words to her that opened her way back, but only at a cost. Read on to know the details.

Here is how Ventress came back to life in Star Wars

After coming back, Ventress is a new person— more grounded, wiser, and even a mentor figure. In Tales of the Underworld, she’s shown guiding a teenage Jedi Padawan who is navigating “The Path”—a secret network of Force-sensitives hiding from the Empire. This suggests that she has learnt lessons from her past and has gained a sense of responsibility. She is determined to protect others because now she knows how it feels to be in pain. Therefore, her death in Dark Disciple was tragic but also redemptive. Her resurrection is officially explained in the 6-episode animated anthology series Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld.

When Ventress suddenly reappeared in The Bad Batch Season 3, fans were surprised. Dark Disciple takes place well before The Bad Batch, meaning she should still be dead. In the episode “The Harbinger,” it doesn't give any reason for how Ventress survived, but her change in personality does suggest that something character-changing has happened off-screen.

In the episode “A Way Forward,” we return to the moment of her burial in Tales of the Underworld. As her spirit prepares to cross into the afterlife, Mother Talzin’s voice reaches out. Ventress is offered a choice. She can either remain with the Nightsisters in spirit or return to life, but at a cost. The cost was that she couldn't be with Quinlan Vos. Talzin further reveals that Vos's final words were "I'll always love you", and this proved to be so powerful that it opened her path back to life. But she needs to choose between peacefully resting with the spirits or choosing to lead a life full of pain alone. Ventress chooses life. She thinks that she can do more, and this is what changes her persona altogether in Star Wars, making her one of the most complex characters.

Ventress never reunites with Quinlan, nor does she try to. Deep down, she realises that to seek him out could bring pain, distraction, and danger to his mission. Therefore, her journey becomes more selfless, about protecting others and eliminating pain from the world like no other person can.

Her growth is shown in how she treats Lyco—not as a burden, but as someone worth investing in. Tolerance becomes her new strength. And with that, Ventress finally finds purpose—not in vengeance, not in romance, but in choosing to do good, quietly, without asking for anything in return.

This suggests that her resurrection was not just a plot twist but a continuation of her arc. She dies with love in her heart, and she comes back despite knowing she can't have it. She still chooses to live. Amidst this, she grows from being a pawn to a survivor, from killer to protector and from seeking love to understanding what it means.
