According to reports, Ridley Scott's production firm, Scott Free Productions, is thinking about turning more of Scott's classic movies into television shows in the wake of the impending release of Alien: Earth and Blade Runner 2099.

This particular decision might usher in a new age of television adaptations. These would be based on the celebrated filmmaker's work and suggest a potential extension of Scott Free's participation in long-form storytelling.

Ridley Scott is one of modern cinema's most prominent filmmakers and is well-known for his distinct visual style and grand narratives. Scott has directed iconic films like Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), and The Martian (2015).

His films have generated over $5 billion worldwide, and some have received Academy Award nominations. Queen Elizabeth II knighted Scott in 2003 for his contributions to the arts, and King Charles III raised him to Knight Grand Cross in 2024.

The studio is currently looking into additional Ridley and Tony Scott films for potential TV adaptations, according to David W. Zucker, Chief Creative Officer of Scott Free. He said in an interview with Variety:

"But we are looking at a number of different [Ridley and Tony Scott movie titles] right now, and the point of entry is really: ‘What is its reason to be?’ because while it’s certainly [the case that] IP is ruling the day, and those titles all have different potential values and degrees of familiarity, it still comes down to what’s the foundational premise and concept for a piece that really merits it being brought forward now."

He continued:

"But there are a few of them that we’re exploring now that I think could have some great potential. By end of summer, I think we’ll know if we have some traction going forward with them.”

Alien: Earth & Blade Runner 2099

Alien: Earth which is premiering in August is directed by Noah Hawley, who is most renowned for his successful television version of Fargo. The series will star Sydney Chandler and Timothy Olyphant. It seeks to carry on Scott's tradition of crafting evocative sci-fi worlds by bringing cinematic size and emotion to the tiny screen.

Blade Runner 2099, on the other hand will be released on Prime Video, and continue the plot of Blade Runner 2049, which takes place in a dystopian future. With Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer in the key roles, the show has recently completed production in Prague. Both shows are being widely monitored as possible models for future adaptations of Scott's work.

Strong vision and inventiveness have always been hallmarks of Ridley Scott's work and mainly after directing commercials and epics like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven in his early career, he has remained a master of world-building. If these two new series Alien: Earth and Blade Runner 2099 are a hit, viewers could soon witness more of his iconic movie adaptations on small screen. This might make television the next big platform for his artistic expression.
