Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary has called for the United States to step up its tech game. In a recent conversation from his interview with Fox Business, Kevin warned about the growing dominance of Chinese tech giants like Huawei.
He wants the American AI and semiconductor industries to develop faster. His remarks were focused on American businesses such as Nvidia and the strategic importance of the recent visit of the US to the Middle East.
Kevin said that he is not concerned about the financial aspects of Nvidia but more about the long-term technological dominance. He said,
"You want every developer on Earth building off the American stack of tech. You want them sitting there grinding out code, attaching it to the tech stack that should dominate the world, and that's Nvidia, that's American technology.
He added,
Or do you want Huawei to dominate that? Because the more you sell, the more market share you have, and the more developers you have. That's how the iPhone became prominent. That's how Samsung became prominent, by getting all the developers underneath it, so you're not reinventing the wheel."
He drew his example from other tech industries that had originated from the United States, such as Apple, which contributed to the global success around them. He said that the wheel is not being reinvented.
However, his biggest concern is the depleting market share because China has started to take more shares of the same. Their government-backed tech enterprises are now dominating the world. Kevin warns,
"It scares the poo-poo out of me when this guy says, 'We're losing share dramatically quarter by quarter,' and other developers in China, which have more developers than any other country except America, are spending their time on Huawei, our competitor."
Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary warns of the rising tech infrastructure by China against the US tech industry
The host on Fox Business asked the Shark Tank investor if countries like the United Arab Emirates would be able to help the US close this gap. He highlighted the recent diplomatic trip taken by President Trump to the Middle East.
He expressed that the most important deal happened in Abu Dhabi when they got together and focused on growing America and the UAE together. According to Kevin, the crown prince signaled a strong willingness to partner with the US, not just in trade, but also in technological co-development.
The Shark Tank investor laid out the concerns, which are shared by many in the United States' tech communities, about the fast growth of Chinese firms in sectors such as AI and computing.
