The Knick has always been a show that fans couldn't forget, and it seems the story might not be over just yet. During a recent interview with IndieWire, André Holland, who played Dr. Algernon Edwards, gave a hopeful update about the show's long-discussed third season.

In the interview, he mentions:

"We're still fighting the fight. This iteration of it that we've created [for a third season] is one [where] we're just waiting on someone to give us the green light to go make it."

The Knick and its unfinished story, along with André Holland’s big update

The Knick, first released in 2014, carved out a special place on Cinemax with its sharp look at medicine, morality, and race relations in early 1900s New York. The show, led by Clive Owen's intense Dr. Thackery, was ahead of its time in terms of style and storytelling.

Yet after just two seasons, Cinemax pulled the plug in 2017, leaving fans to wonder what could have been.

For years, whispers of a revival circled, but little concrete ever came forward. That changed when acclaimed filmmaker Barry Jenkins was attached to develop a continuation. Then came the news that Holland himself would play a key role in bringing the story forward.

Speaking to IndieWire, Holland confirmed that a roadmap for season 3 already exists. He said:

"We've already gotten pretty much the whole season mapped out. We've got a great couple of scripts that we feel really passionately about, and everybody who reads it, loves it.”

It is rare for a canceled show to have scripts waiting in the wings. That detail alone proves the creative team hasn't abandoned the vision. Holland explained that what stands in the way is not story, but logistics.

The hunt for a "right home" is what keeps production paused. In his words:

"I think it's just a matter of finding the right home for the show. I'm hoping that this new surge of interest will get people to see how valuable the show was and how much of an appetite there is for it."

Where The Knick could land and why the timing feels right?

The Knick's original streaming home, Cinemax, no longer develops shows, meaning the revival needs a new platform. All signs point to HBO as the most natural fit.

With HBO recently seeing big success from its other medical drama, The Pitt, interest in the genre is strong. That momentum could give The Knick the extra push it needs.

Fans already know The Knick was never just about surgery, and it was about pushing boundaries when science, race, and society all came together. The storytelling was daring, and the cinematography unforgettable.

Clive Owen's troubled genius, paired with Holland's quiet brilliance as Dr. Edwards, made the show a cut above. With new scripts ready and building energy, the revival feels like more than a long shot.

Even the creators haven't left the universe behind. Co-creator Michael Begler revealed in 2023 that he has been shaping a spin-off set in Harlem in 1919. That ongoing development signals just how alive the world of The Knick remains for its writers.

For Holland, the fight is ongoing. He said in his IndieWire interview that the team is ready to roll once the opportunity comes:

"We've got a great couple of scripts... everybody who reads it, loves it."

The Knick might have been off-air for nearly a decade, but its pulse is still strong thanks to André Holland and the creative team refusing to let it fade. With scripts ready and talent eager to return, the show's future is less about possibility and more about timing.

As Holland put it, they are still fighting the fight. Now it is just about someone stepping up to let the story live again.
