Nobody interacts with the liars, Bonnie reacts awkwardly, and other clues about the ending of We Were Liars
1. The neighbor mentions Cadence jumping off the cliff but not the liars

We Were Liars is filled with twists and turns and every little detail matters. Therefore, when the neighbor mentions that she had seen Cadence jumping off the cliff, Cadence decides to do it again and jumps off the cliff into the water, in an effort to recover her memories. The decision is reckless and when Penny asks Cadence in We Were Liars as to why she did such a thing, Cadence simply answers that it is because the neighbor saw her jumping off the cliff. There is a clue in this incident as the neighbor might not have mentioned the other liars as they were ghosts, which was revealed at the end. It also could have been that the neighbor did not see Johnny and Gat going in after her. Therefore, this instance holds a possible clue to the twist ending.
2. Cadence makes up memories about Gat in summer 16

Each summer is crucial in We Were Liars and even though the viewers are following the point of view of Cadence, there is an instance that reveals for the first time that she is an unreliable narrator and cannot be trusted. In one of the scenes, Cadence begins to question her own grasp on reality when she finds herself in her bed after the library incident. Further, when she asks Gat about their first official date, Gat mentions that they never even went to have an ice cream or watch the sunset. This is an important clue as even though it does not hint about the fire or the liars being dead in We Were Liars, it does prove that Cadence makes up memories and therefore she is an unreliable narrator. Her memories of the past or the present cannot be trusted. Till this point, only her memories of the past were in question.
3. Nobody else interacts with the liars in summer 16

Another important clue in We Were Liars that subtly points out the fact that Gat, Johnny, and Mirren are dead, is the fact that none of the characters from the Sinclair family ever talk to anyone directly, apart from Cadence. While throughout the show, the Sinclair family is seen around the liars in summer 16, there is no interaction between them and this helps to hide the fact that all three are dead. The fact that this thing goes unnoticed is because the Sinclairs hate each other and therefore it seems as if they are holding grudges and therefore not talking to each other. The fact of the matter is that the family cannot talk to the other liars because they are ghosts only appearing to Cady to help her process her grief. On the other hand, the only person who can maybe see them is Carrie, who interacts with Johnny’s ghost at the end of the show.
4. The liars didn’t come to visit Cadence at the hospital

Another clue in We Were Liars is that Cadence is confused as to why none of the liars came to see her in the hospital after she returns for summer 16. Cadence is worried about none of the liars calling her on the phone or supporting her during her recovery as well. It is as if they were never there and they did not want to contact her. This is one big clue in We Were Liars as it foreshadows the fact that all three of the liars are in fact, ghosts. Otherwise, it is strange to see that the four had become the best of friends and had disappeared all of a sudden. While it is difficult to make the leap from the trio not visiting to them being dead, it does give a significant clue about the fact that they are ghosts, which is revealed at the end. Viewers who were watching the show acutely, might have caught on to this one.
5. An important quote points to Gat being gone

There is an important quote in We Were Liars that also hints at the fact that Gat is dead. It is the final dialogue of the show where it is said, “there were summers before Gat, and there will be summers after.” While it is stated in the context of him leaving the island for a scholarship interview, it is easily hidden and can be written off. However, the statement subtly reveals to the viewers that Gat is not a living being in summer 16. Therefore, Gat is also just a ghost who is appearing to Cadence like Johnny and Mirren so that she can help remember the truth about her accident. We Were Liars is a cleverly written show as there are a lot of hints throughout but most viewers are unable to catch the meaning of it till the twist ending.
6. Ed tells Gat that he has a whole life ahead of him

We Were Liars continues to provide hints throughout the course of its entire season and one of those hints come from a statement that Ed says. The statement is actually heartbreaking in retrospect as he tells Gat that he has a whole life waiting for him. However, viewers know by the finale that this statement is so heartbreaking as Gat eventually dies. The statement is said when Ed talks about whether the liars can be better than their parents. Therefore, Ed says that the youngsters have a whole life ahead of them and they can choose how to live it. This statement is a very subtly but powerful foreshadowing moment as the liars end up taking a drastic action to change the Sinclair family forever. Therefore, We Were Liars is full of such subtle hints throughout the season that point towards the devastating end.
7. Bonnie reacts awkwardly to the ghost story interaction

Astute viewers of We Were Liars can deduce from some important scenes in the show about how the others react when talked about the trio when they are around Cadence. One such instance is when Cadence is lying down on the beach with Mirren and Bonnie comes down to lie with them as well. Bonnie asks Cadence to tell her a ghost story to which Cadence replies that she does not have any stories to tell as she has run out of them and Bonnie can ask Mirren instead for a tale. This scene is important as Bonnie becomes awkward and acts as if Cadence made a very bad joke. Ultimately, it is only when the finale of the show occurs that viewers can recall why Bonnie reacted this way because Mirren was in fact dead and Bonnie thought that Cadence was making a joke out of it.
8. The home is redesigned in a new style

While Harris is one of the problematic characters in We Were Liars, he is also an important one. Throughout the show, Harris is constructed as a character who is set in his ways and does not budge from them. He is deeply stuck in his own ways and he likes to follow traditions every year. Plus, he also has old and racist notions about ethnicity and race and he wants his entire family to look exactly the same, which is light-skinned and with blond hair. He even refuses to change his language to be less racist. Therefore, when it is revealed that Harris has redesigned his home in a new style in We Were Liars, it is uncharacteristic of him and hides an important and subtle clue about the show’s finale. The change in his house reveals that he had to do it because he had no choice left. It is only later that viewers get to know that his house was burned and therefore he redesigned it.
9. Johnny’s mom reacts drastically when she sees her son’s phone

Another important clue in We Were Liars that points out the strange behaviour of the rest of the character around the liars is when Cadence suspects that Johnny is hiding something from her and she goes looking for his phone. She eventually finds the device and unlocks it to find a video of her cousin beating a boy and leaving him to die. When Johnny’s mom sees the phone she begins to have a distressing reaction and while the show hides the reaction in the context of a mother getting to know about her son’s wrongful actions, it is later revealed that Johnny’s mom already knew what he had done. Therefore, her drastic emotional reaction was for the fact that her dead son’s phone had been found. We Were Liars is filled with with such hints across its entire season.
10. Cadence asks Gat if he is real in a flashback

One of the first hints about the liars being dead in We Were Liars is when Cadence meets Gat for the first time in the series. She directly asks him if he is real and he says that he thinks so. The playful interaction is written off as nothing spectacular until the finale reveals that Gat and the others were not living beings and were dead the whole time. It is also easy to write this interaction off as Cady was obsessed with fairytales and she didn’t notice who looked different from her on the island before. Therefore, this is one of the first hints in the show that points towards the twist ending. Only viewers who have been watching the show closely can catch on to these hints in retrospect or when it is happening and it feels like something is off.
