With the first season acquiring heavy critical praise, the dark comedy has now set its eyes on newer territory—literally and in terms of creativity, both.

The update covers production plans, filming locations, and the team's plans to expand the show's eccentric world.

New direction, same Florida flavor: Bad Monkey Season 2 takes shape

Production for Bad Monkey Season 2 is finally gearing up. Vince Vaughn, the star and executive producer, recently publicized in an interview with Collider that filming will be commencing later this year.

While the show stays in its Florida setting, most production will now occur in California. Talking about this shift, Vaughn says;

“We will start filming this year. I think they have the outline for the first four episodes. I don't want to give away too much because we kind of left it in a great place to see where a lot of different things go, but I think that what Bill has as far as what's going on is super, super fun and interesting, and a really great next step for the characters.”

Even though this newer season bends away from strictly adhering to Carl Hiaasen’s novels, showrunner Bill Lawrence and his team remain dedicated to conserving the original tone and texture that made Season 1 such a win.

While the setting for production may change, Vaughn comforted fans that key outdoor shots will still be filmed in Florida to maintain the story’s geographical validity.

Shooting closer to home: practicality meets creative intent

The choice of wanting to relocate a significant portion of the Bad Monkey production to California isn’t just for logistics purposes—it’s also for deeply personal reasons when it comes to the creators/show runners.

Vaughn emphasized the benefits of living near his family and also working with top-tier crews at the same time. He says;

“Well, Florida is such an iconic part of that story that we're still going to shoot the exteriors and a lot of that stuff in Florida…but a lot of the interiors and stuff we're going to be able to do in California. Bill [Lawrence], who runs the show, lives there, we both have kids, and it's true what you're saying.”

Vaughn also praised California-based crews for their methodical excellence, stating;

“These movies and these TV shows are really only as good as all of the technicians that work on the movie and all these departments, and there's some unbelievable crews in California.”

Bad Monkey is curating an exciting and slightly new path moving forward, with merging familiar roots and fresh executions for production.

With filming ready to begin this year and a storyline that guarantees to go above and beyond the source material, fans can expect another rollercoaster ride—this time, Florida’s beaches and California’s soundstages.

Season 2 of Bad Monkey may look a bit different behind the scenes, but its core remains tightly secured.
