The Netflix series Wednesday is returning for its second season, and lead actor Jenna Ortega has shared details about one of the most anticipated moments. According to Ortega, her character, Wednesday Addams, will have more screen time with Morticia Addams, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones.
This includes what Ortega described as an “intense sword fight scene,” which she called one of her favorite parts of the entire series. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ortega explained that working closely with Zeta-Jones allowed the two characters’ relationship to develop further in Season 2. She said,
“I mean, the sword fight scene is one of my favorite things to come out of the show in its entirety. Obviously, Catherine is incredibly gifted and skilled and has such a rich history in film and television.”
She added that this storyline gives more depth to both Wednesday and Morticia, exploring the dynamic between mothers and daughters in a new way.
Part 1 of Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on August 6, with creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar promising new cast members, guest stars, and expanded character arcs.
Jenna Ortega on building the Morticia dynamic
Ortega explained that Season 2 expands on the relationship between Wednesday and Morticia. She said she was “so grateful” for her scenes with Zeta-Jones in the first season and looked forward to continuing that work.

“So to be able to elaborate that on a second season and to add complexity to both of our characters and to bring some sort of tether into this uh, you know, quite ethereal magical show,” she said.
The sword fight is one of the key moments that reflect this development. According to Ortega, the scene represents more than just action.
“It's-it's so great to be able to uh also represent what feels uh, you know, like the very accurate day-to-day life, both modern and, you know, over decades and centuries, you know, just the relationship between mothers and daughters and that fight for independence,” she said.
This focus on family dynamics is part of the series’ broader theme of balancing supernatural elements with real-world emotions, something Ortega said she personally related to:
“I just—I relate to the storyline a lot. Um and I've definitely felt like Wednesday uh, you know, as she does in this season. So it was great to be able to put that on screen.”
Catherine Zeta-Jones brings Morticia’s story forward
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zeta-Jones also spoke about her expanded role. Season 2 will allow Morticia Addams to delve deeper into her backstory and her relationship with her daughter. Ortega’s comments suggest that the sword fight between Wednesday and Morticia is part of this effort to give Morticia more presence in the series.
In Season 1, Morticia was primarily a figure from Wednesday’s past, appearing in limited scenes. Season 2 changes that dynamic by allowing Morticia to interact with Nevermore Academy’s storylines more directly. Zeta-Jones described bringing more of Morticia’s perspective to the screen as an important part of understanding how Wednesday develops her sense of identity.
With the series also introducing new characters, such as Steve Buscemi as Barry Dort, the new head of Nevermore Academy, this focus on Morticia ensures that the family remains central to the narrative even as the world of Wednesday expands.
What can fans expect from Wednesday Season 2?
Along with the sword fight and deeper family arcs, Season 2 includes several high-profile guest stars. Series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar revealed that Lady Gaga and Christopher Lloyd have been cast in guest roles. Fred Armisen will return as Uncle Fester, and new characters will join the story as Nevermore Academy faces fresh challenges.
Part 1 of the season, releasing on August 6, will set the stage for these changes. According to Ortega’s comments, the sword fight scene reflects both character growth and the ongoing tension between independence and connection.
Her remarks suggest that this moment will not only showcase action but also symbolize the struggle between Wednesday and Morticia’s differing views on life and family.
As Ortega put it,
“So it was great to be able to put that on screen,”
signaling that this storyline carries both personal meaning for her as an actor and narrative importance for the series.
