Lady Gaga appears as Rosaline Rotwood in Episode 6 of Wednesday Season 2 Part 2. According to the show’s official X account, she was described as “cloaked in mystery with a reputation that precedes her.”

According to Gough, she fits into the gothic world of the show “seamlessly” and plays a “crucial character” in that episode and for the overall “mythology” of the series. Millar tells Deadline, “In terms of planting her character, we wanted to make it something that was embedded in the mythology of Nevermore…You see the cottage…and then you learn the backstory through the interaction with Wednesday. It came together very quickly.”

In the episode, Wednesday asks her grandmother, Hester, for a way to access her psychic gift, so that she can find Tyler, and she recommends that she go to the grave of Rosaline Rotwood and recite the inscription there so that she can connect with the late Nevermore professor, who was a Raven. Turns out, Rotwood was known for her psychic talent, and she was a professor when Hester was a student at Nevermore.

In the graveyard, Wednesday utters the ominous inscription, and she gains temporary second sight. Wednesday then finds herself in the chamber of Rotwood’s cottage, and Lady Gaga is dressed in all-white. She tells Wednesday not to break her gaze, but Enid comes and breaks Wednesday’s gaze. Turns out, Wednesday has to “pay the price” and have a body swap with Enid. While Wednesday in Enid’s body goes to Rotwood’s séance chamber, Rotwood appears to tell her that they must unravel the secrets of the people they’ve entered and even be willing to die.

Further, Lady Gaga also wrote a song for the show called “The Dead Dance,” and it is played over Enid’s and Agnes’ gala dance scene. There is even a music video led by Gaga and directed by Tim Burton. Gough says that he knew that Lady Gaga liked the show and, therefore, she was approached. “We were looking for a way to have her in the show,” he adds. Further, Gough and Millar told Deadline that they would love to have the singer again in Season 3.

Some critics, including Marcus James Dixon from Gold Derby, have pointed out that the pop singer’s role in Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 was far too brief. Despite the hype surrounding her appearance, Lady Gaga is on screen for just one minute and forty-six seconds. Even in “Woe Thyself,” one of the season’s longest episodes, her screen time amounts to only 3% of the total runtime. Dixon suggests that this limited presence could prevent her from qualifying for next year’s Emmy Awards, as the Academy requires a guest star to appear in at least 5% of an episode. Fans online also expressed disappointment over the singer’s minimal appearance.
