Good news for all the Game of Thrones fans as the show's prequel is about to arrive in January 2026, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The Ira Parker and George R.R. Martin's creation for HBO is going to be an American fantasy drama series, the third TV adaptation from Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire universe.

The show is set nearly a century before the events of Game of Thrones and is centred on Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight who travels the Seven Kingdoms in search of adventure and purpose. Alongside him is Egg, who is secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen. According to reports, the show will comprise six episodes and will explore the early days of the Targaryen dynasty as well as the politics of Westeros that existed years ago.

Read on to know more about what else we know about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

What is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms about?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, as mentioned, is going to be a prequel to the popular show Game of Thrones. As per IMDb, the synopsis of the upcoming show reads,

"A century before GOT, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his squire, Egg, wandered through Westeros while the Targaryen dynasty ruled the Iron Throne, and dragons were still remembered. Great destinies and enemies await the incomparable friends."

To be precise, the show starts 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and it adapts George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, exploring the Westeros past. According to reports, the first season is likely to cover The Hedge Knight, the first of the three novellas, and his journey within the kingdom.

The story begins with Dunk entering a tournament in Reach, one of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. There, he meets Egg and several other Targaryens. As they journey across Westeros, they witness the political intrigue along with the local disputes and the lives of common folk under Targaryen rule.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be much more peaceful and establish the scenes and wars we see in GOT. There are no active dragons and no existential threats like the Others in the coming show, suggesting a more grounded and intimate feel where the fans can deeply connect and learn about the characters. The tone, story, and focus will be more low-key, demonstrating the complex moralities of characters.

The cast list of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms explored

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is backed further with a brilliant cast ensemble and hopefully, impactful performances. The cast includes Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg (Prince Aegon Targaryen), Peter Claffey as the hedge knight, Dunk, Finn Bennett as the arrogant Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, a Dornish puppeteer.

Alongside them are Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon and Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen.

The show is executive-produced by Martin, Parker, Ryan Condal, and others and is set to premiere on HBO in January 2026. Martin has watched the six episodes and expressed his excitement about the show on his blog post, while also confirming that the show has moved to its post-production successfully.

"I loved them. Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible. The rest of the cast are terrific as well. Wait until you guys meet the Laughing Storm. and Tanselle Too-Tall."

The show is meant to explore knighthood, honour, and their journey within the kingdom, with more focus on ordinary and less on grand, portraying a fresh and unique take on the world of dragons.
