Actress Maggie Q made her debut in Ballard Season 1, the latest entry into Amazon Prime's Detective-verse based on books, after Reacher and Bosch.

The 2025 police procedural is a spin-off series of Titus Welliver-led Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, which is based on Michael Connelly's series of crime fiction books. While Welliver's Bosch: Legacy was recently canceled after three seasons, Connelly's Harry Bosch universe is expanding with Maggie Q's Detective Renee Ballard.

The spin-off series, which debuted in July 2025, is based on three of Connelly's novels. These are The Late Show (2017), The Dark Hours (2021), and Desert Star (2022).

Ballard follows Renee as she commands the understaffed and under-resourced LAPD's newly formed cold case unit of the Robbery-Homicide Division and takes on several cases.

More on this in our story.

What book is Ballard Season 1 based on?

While Ballard is not based on a particular book, Maggie Q's titular character is based on Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch series of novels, where Renee is a recurring character.

The character was introduced in Connelly's 2017 novel, The Late Show, where she is an up-and-coming detective, determined to prove her worth to the world. The detective teams up with Harry Bosch on his ongoing case and makes several notable appearances in subsequent novels, including Dark Sacred Night (2018), The Night Fire (2019), The Dark Hours (2021), Desert Star (2022), and The Waiting (2024).

Ballard Season 1 draws inspiration from The Late Show and books four and five, The Dark Hours and Desert Star. While the events are not based faithfully on any one book, the character details are molded from all three books, as Q told Amazon:

“With the first novel The Late Show, and then you go into these five books, we were inspired by Books 4 and 5 too. Really this amalgamation of all the different books for this first season. Michael’s voice is very unique in the world he creates.”

When is Maggie Q's Renee Ballard introduced in the Bosch universe?

Titus Welliver's run as the titular detective in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy concluded after 10 seasons, following which Maggie Q hs made her debut in the spin-off series.

Bosch and Ballard can also be watched as independent shows, though Q's character was introduced in the Bosch: Legacy Season 3 finale. The finale featured Harry's Flower Girl murder case, one of the most harrowing cases of his career, which still gives him nightmares, and he feels guilty for his failure to solve the crime.

Renee was introduced as a Robbery-Homicide-Division Agent, who took over Harry's Flower Girl murder case with new enthusiasm. While the two started on the wrong foot, with Renee suspecting Bosch of foul play, they eventually became a team and solved the case together.

Renee's introduction in the Legacy series finale perfectly set her up as the titular detective of her spin-off series, expanding Connelly's book universe. Much to the delight of OG fans, Welliver also appeared in the spin-off series and aided Renee on her ongoing case.

Much like its predecessor, which was also a combination of two or more books, Ballard Season 1 followed three of Connelly's books, introducing fans to Renee's world and bringing a much-needed female perspective to the Bosch detective-verse.
