Cancel Netflix is trending on Twitter as of September 1, 2025, and according to reports, this initiated after the creator of Netflix’s Dead End: Paranormal Park, Hamish Steele, reportedly made inflammatory remarks about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, calling him a “N*zi” in a social-media post. Steele was further opposed for including transgender representation in his show, especially portraying the main character as trans.

It is to be noted that such hashtags about cancelling Netflix have previously surfaced, too. The protestors are encouraging everyone to unsubscribe from Netflix and boycott the platform. The movement escalated when even Elon Musk, the owner of SpaceX (earlier Twitter), also cancelled his Netflix subscription, participating in the protest.

After the demise of the right-wing activist and conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, when the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer sent condolences to his family via a Twitter post, Steele replied, calling Kirk a "n*zi". This is what led to the backlash. Steele said:

"Your sympathy for any of the families being slaughtered by your own weapons, but a random N*zi gets shot and it's a public statement."

Steele's comments' screenshots circulated on social media, leading to outrage against the creator and the platform that showcases his work.

A man posted on X about him cancelling his Netflix subscription after Steele's comment on Kirk's death, to which Elon Musk, a prominent MAGA-aligned personality, replied that even he has done the same and has cancelled the platform's subscription.

When Steele's show Dead End: Paranormal Park dropped, it also suffered criticism for showing the lead character as trans, stating that the show is "pushing pro-transgender on children". The show is an animated one and is advertised as kid-friendly. This is what makes the conservationists paranoid, as they tell the parents to "beware" of the show. But when the creator commented about Kirk's death, the spark led to a movement with people announcing "cancel Netflix" and stating Hamish Steele as the reason.

The catch is that Musk's comment about the trans kid and slamming the Netflix employee has not been documented much by the media, while most of the reports only show Steele's comment and Musk's cancellation of the subscription.

This movement was a result of an accumulated outrage, blaming Netflix for "promoting woke agendas"

The Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings donated $2 million to support California Governor Gavin Newsom's campaign, seen to favour democrats. This led to some MAGA-aligned users on X to respond with outrage and claim Netflix is politically biased. This was when the users began posting "cancel Netflix" hashtags and messages. They also blamed the platform for promoting left-leaning figures and promoting woke agendas.

Here entered Elon Musk, who publicly agrees with cancelling Netflix due to Hamish Steele’s controversial remarks about Charlie Kirk. This escalated the entire cancel Netflix movement with MAGA users boycotting Netflix, and some being upset about the platform portraying shows that represent transgender characters.

This cancel Netflix movement is clearly politically motivated, with people from a particular ideology, particularly the conservationist and the MAGA-aligned group, opposing others and boycotting a platform that promotes any "different" or progressive views.
