Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 1 finally premiered, bringing a tone that is heavy and high stakes. The fifth and final season leans straight into the fallout of the Upside Down’s invasion and the chaos that was unleashed by a supernatural war.

Among them, a girl who has survived experiments, monsters, government crackdowns, and a troubled past, named Eleven, shines through. In Season 5 of Stranger Things, she finds herself under a new kind of threat, one that directly threatens her powers.

Eleven’s powers are linked to the Upside Down, the zone that poses a threat to Hawkins. After the widespread destruction, the military enters the town and establishes a research team that investigates Upside Down up close.

During their study, they find a way to deter and harm Eleven and those gifted like her. They attach a sonic emission satellite on top of their vehicle, and the emission makes Eleven experience pain and nosebleeds, overwhelming her psychic capabilities.

Eleven’s weakness in Stranger Things Season 5

We have seen all about her powers throughout the five seasons (Season 5 Vol. 1 has not yet reached the finale, and Vol. 2 is yet to be released). For now, let us take a deeper look at her weakness in Season 5 Vol. 1.

Season 4 left off with destruction and despair, setting the stage for the military to enter Hawkins and assert its takeover of the place. But their mission goes beyond just containment; they want Eleven neutralized. To them, she is a threat and a reason that will lead their motto to fail.

Season 5 zooms in on their operation that now revolves around the Upside Down itself. Their team is studying everything up close. What remains pivotal are the small devices mounted on their vehicles, emitting a sonic signal.

Regular people are not affected by it. Hopper does not react to it at all, but all those with psychic and special abilities feel the impact. As a common guess would go, they feel it violently.

When the signal hits Eleven, she collapses in overwhelming pain. Her nose bleeds. Her powers short-circuit. She loses control in seconds. The signal seems to distort and overwhelm the mental pathways connected to her powers. The signal essentially overloads her mind. However, the finer technicalities of it are yet to be explored.

Eleven stumbles upon even disturbing information, peeping inside a soldier’s mind. She sees a locked room tied to the weapon and believes Vecna is being held there.

Later, episode 4 confirms the prisoner is actually Kali, Experiment Eight, whom Eleven met years earlier. Kali has been connected to machinery, hinting that the team may be using her powers to generate the signal mayhem. Now that they’ve studied it, they could replicate the effect and use it repeatedly on both women.

A brief backstory of Eleven

Born as Jane Ives, Eleven entered a world already disturbed by the MKUltra experiments conducted on her mother. Dr. Brenner took her with him and raised Jane inside Hawkins Lab. This incident set her fate in stone; she would eventually become Eleven.

Her character was kept in isolation. She was tested and pushed through harsh psychic experiments. She spent years in sensory-deprivation tanks and was forced to open Gates that no child should be allowed to enter.

This makes her one of the bravest and most powerful characters in Stranger Things’ universe. A major turning point came in 1983, when she escaped and crossed paths with Mike, Lucas, and Dustin.

From this point onwards, Eleven took a new trajectory. She was fighting the Demogorgon, facing the Mind Flayer, and later confronted Henry Creel. Creel was the first test subject who became One and gradually became one of the most feared villains in supernatural horror history.
