In the closing moments of Outlander: Blood of My Blood’s first season, the story paused with Jamie and Claire’s parents caught between hope and uncertainty.

While Julia and Henry found themselves at a literal crossroads of past and present with their baby at Craigh Na Dun, Ellen and Brian contemplated their future action after eloping together from Castle Leoch.

Since Outlander: Blood of My Blood is already renewed for Season 2, with production currently underway in Scotland, we know that Jamie and Claire's parents' fantastical love stories will continue with even more twists and turns.

Ellen and Brian's short-lived happiness was abruptly paused when Brian saw burning crosses across the mountainside. Seasoned Outlander fans would recognise them as Fiery Crosses, a signal for clansmen to report to their laird and prepare for war. The burning crosses in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale were a signal for all Jacobite rebels to be ready for the fight.

More on this in our story.

What do the Fiery Crosses mean at the end of Outlander: Blood of My Blood?

While Brian and Ellen managed to elope from Castle Leoch, thanks to Mrs. Fitz and Jocasta's help, their happiness was short-lived. After consummating their love in the secluded bothy, Jamie's parents were enjoying some quality time together when Brian noticed the burning of multiple Fiery Crosses in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 1 finale.

The burning of these fiery crosses signalled a call for all clansmen to report to their respective lairds and prepare for battle. Since Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 1 was building on the Jacobite Uprising, Brian immediately recognised the crosses as a signal for war. Brian reveals the real meaning behind that political call, as he tells Ellen that failure to report to your laird will mean death.

Since Outlander's prequel series features many real historical events, Season 2 will likely follow the Jacobite Uprising of 1715, where Bonnie Prince Charlie’s father, the displaced James Edward Stuart, attempted to take back his throne. While history never favored Jacobites again, this conflict could be one of the major features in the upcoming season.

The Fiery Crosses could change the course of Brian and Ellen’s future in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2

As a young and able warrior, Brian is politically obliged to report to his laird in the upcoming Jacobite Uprising. However, his position as Simon Fraser's b*st*rd son will make things challenging for him in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2. After his falling out with Simon at Braemar, he was abandoned by his father and he currently stands with no clan and no money to his name.

While he could adopt his wife's Clan MacKenzie, it is unlikely that Colum and Dougal will accept him after he helped her elope from Castle Leoch. Since Ellen and Brian almost brought disgrace to Clan MacKenzie by fleeing on the former's wedding day, they will not accept Brian as their sister's husband. Brian's difficult position suggests that the couple's future will be highly uncertain in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2.

Jamie Roy (Brian) breaks the Fiery Crosses tease to Decider as:

“Back in those days when those fires do get lit, you are supposed to go to your laird in command.''

He added:

“This is the question, Where does he go? Because he’s pretty much called it quits with his dad, but he’s not exactly welcome at Clan Mackenzie. So, you know, where does he go?”

Wherever Brian goes, one thing is clear. Ellen will follow him as his wife, as Harriet Slater added:

“I think whatever Brian chooses to do, Ellen will support him. She’s Ellen Mackenzie. I don’t think she’s going to be able to stay out of anything for long.”

While the Fiery Cross tease was small, it will certainly have larger implications for Jamie's parents in the second season.
