American Primeval is a six-episode limited series on Netflix that chronicles the violent struggles to control an otherwise wild and lawless Utah frontier. Coming from creators Peter Berg and Mark L. Smith, American Primeval showcases brutal violence among several groups including bands of settlers, members of the Mormon church and the Indigenous community all vying for themselves to gain control of the land.
American Primeval has been praised for several things and the unrelenting and gory portrayal of historical violence is one of the show's strong suits. American Primeval takes a close look at the haunting Mountain Meadows massacre that came to shape the early history of Utah itself. In this war, Mormons manipulated and deployed the Indigenous community to massacre the group of settlers.
Brother Jacob Pratt's character is a particularly tragic one as he nearly met his maker during the massacre, after being assaulted and half-scalped. Although he ends up being the only survivor, he is separated from his wife. As his mental health declines on account of his trauma, Brother Pratt consistently tries to find his wife with the help of the US military and his own Mormon leaders.
Pratt eventually discovers one day while traveling with Cook that the latter was involved in the Massacre, judging by the watch on Cook which belongs to a dead man. Cook is eventually murdered by Brother Jacob Pratt after the latter discovers his involvement in the ruthless massacre.
American Primeval: Did Brother Pratt reunite with his wife?
The fate that befalls Brother Pratt and his wife Abish on American Primeval is indeed tragic. Driven by the force of circumstances, Abish is initially separated and then made to join forces with the Indigenous Shoshone Tribe. The couple gets involved with opposing sides fighting the Utah war.
Throughout the miniseries, Pratt is consumed by the drive to find his wife. He does not care even if he finds her dead. Ultimately, towards the show finale, Pratt accidentally shoots and kills his own wife Abish after mistaking her for a member of the Shoshone tribe.
Showrunners open up about Isaac and Sara's fate
Peter Berg, Mark L. Smith, and actor Taylor Kitsch recently opened up in an interview with Netflix's Tudum where they stated that Isaac ultimately sacrificed himself for the well-being of Sara by the end of American Primeval. Kitsch stated:
"Isaac is an irreparably broken man from the beginning. It’s rare that you meet people whose problems and situations in life are so tragic that you actually think that a noble death is maybe the best possible outcome. Isaac is in that strike zone. Isaac is a man in mourning. Sara shows Isaac that there is still light in the dark. She represents hope to him, as much as he fights it."
Berg commented:
"It’s sad. It’s an underreported aspect of filmmaking. I had no problem with Isaac dying, but seeing Taylor dying and realizing that he’s my friend and that my friend’s going to die one day, it’s just something that you never … It’s gotten me a few times in my career, directing. He took it well, but I think he probably believed up until we wrapped that day that we might change our mind — and possibly still thinks it’s not too late to go back and do a quick reshoot."
American Primeval is exclusively available to stream on Netflix.
