Lucille Robinson, played by Leonie Elliott, joined Call the Midwife in season 7 and quickly became one of its most memorable characters. She was the first West Indian nurse to arrive at Nonnatus House, reflecting the real wave of Commonwealth nurses who came to Britain in the 1960s when the NHS was struggling for staff, and from the start, Lucille’s presence mattered. She faced prejudice in Poplar but built a reputation as a kind, skilled, and dependable midwife.

But happiness for Lucille did not last. In Call the Midwife season 11, she experienced a miscarriage. After that, her attempts with Cyril to have a child again only deepened her sadness. Around the same time, racial abuse in Poplar increased after Enoch Powell’s Rivers of Blood speech, leaving her feeling more isolated. By season 12, she suffered a nervous breakdown, and Cyril arranged for her to return home to Jamaica.

Lucille’s departure in season 12 resulted from several tough years catching up with her. After she miscarried in Call the Midwife season 11, she returned to work almost immediately, but the loss lingered. She focused on her patients to cope, yet it put strain on her marriage when she and Cyril couldn’t conceive again.

At the same time, racial tensions in Poplar worsened after Enoch Powell’s “Rivers of Blood” speech. Lucille, who usually stays calm in the face of prejudice, faced blatant abuse, and in one case, a woman in labor made racist remarks, causing Lucille to walk out of the room - something completely out of character for her.

She also began questioning her faith, telling Cyril and Mrs. Wallace that she felt abandoned by God. Her sadness deepened, she started missing work, and she became more withdrawn. At her lowest point, she even thought about stepping in front of traffic before stopping herself. It was clear then that she needed proper medical help and rest away from Poplar.

Dr. Turner confirmed what Cyril already feared: Lucille was suffering a nervous breakdown. Recognizing that she needed rest and family support, Cyril used their savings to buy her an open ticket to Jamaica. Lucille accepted, leaving Poplar in the sidecar of a motorcycle with Cyril driving her to the airport.

What made her absence more permanent was her decision once back in Jamaica. Instead of simply resting, Lucille took a job at a local hospital. She later accepted a six-month position as a Sister on the maternity ward, making it clear she wasn’t ready to return to England. Cyril even traveled to Jamaica in season 12 to persuade her, but he came back alone.

By season 13 of Call the Midwife, her absence was final. Lucille never appeared on-screen, and Cyril carried on without her, focusing on his work as a child welfare officer. While his character still talked about writing letters and keeping hope alive, the show’s writers confirmed Leonie Elliott had left, closing the door on Lucille’s story in Poplar.

After Lucille left in season 12, her absence was felt heavily. Cyril, who had always been portrayed as her rock, was left to navigate life in Poplar without her. He leaned on Fred and Violet Buckle for support, and his storyline shifted toward community work as he took on a new role as a child welfare officer. This career change gave the character purpose, but also highlighted the void Lucille’s departure created. Viewers saw him bond with a stray cat named Nigel, a quiet symbol of his loneliness.

Behind the scenes, actress Leonie Elliott confirmed her exit was permanent. In her statement, she thanked fans for embracing Lucille and said playing the character had been an honour, especially in portraying the struggles of the Windrush generation. Elliott also acknowledged how difficult it was to film Lucille’s final season, given the focus on miscarriage, depression, and racism.

Her exit leaves several unanswered questions. The show has not officially closed the door on her return, but Call the Midwife season 14 introduced the possibility of a permanent split when Cyril revealed that Lucille had asked for a divorce. For many fans, this development confirmed that her story in Poplar had truly ended.
