Madeline Wuntch from Brooklyn Nine-Nine might get on the nerves of some (especially her archenemy Captain Raymond Holt), but her sassiness lives on.

Kyra Sedgwick portrays the role of Madeline Wuntch in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. She debuted in Season 2.

Wuntch initially appears as the Deputy Chief of Department and later becomes the acting Commissioner of NYPD after John Kelly resigns.

She's petty and manipulative, but when it comes to her profession, she seamlessly matches Holt's wits. Her rivalry with Holt is a major plotline of the series. Their interaction has given us some of the most iconic comebacks.

So when Kyra Sedgwick's Madeline Wuntch was written off abruptly in Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7, there was a void that no other character could fill. In Episode 7 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7, Terry reveals that Madeline Wuntch is no more. The news leaves the 99th precinct in shock. Even though Holt initially thought that this might be one of her lame pranks, he eventually decides to give a speech at her memorial.

Episode 7 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 begins with the team gathering in the meeting room, waiting for Terry to deliver news from the office of Commissioner Wuntch.

Holt mocks Wuntch as he calls her a human blister and a Korean Toilet Ghost, Cheuskin. It's hilarious until Terry delivers shocking news that Madeline Wuntch is dead. The reason for Wuntch's death remains a mystery throughout the episode. Holt refuses to believe it and calls it a scam. He even opens up her coffin to check it out himself.

He finally realises that Madeline Wuntch is dead. He distributes bagels to celebrate his arch nemesis's death. However, the celebration halts when he receives an email with a clip. Wuntch pre-recorded a video challenging Holt with an impossible task. Holt has to deliver a speech at Wuntch's memorial.

Turns out, it's a real task for Holt, as badmouthing her on a public platform could lead to further demotion. Amy and Rosa help him with his speech. But it does not work. So when Memorial Day arrives, Holt is nervous but unwilling to lose the last challenge. He then meets Adam, who acknowledges himself as Wuntch's main rival. This shatters Holt, who seems jealous. He tries to team up with Adam. But turns out Adam was Wuntch's nephew, and he records Holt badmouthing Wuntch and plays it on the screen to sabotage the memorial speech. Holt knew that Wuntch would play her last move, and so he revealed that it was a setup.

Later, Holt delivers one of the most emotional and heartfelt speeches at the memorial held for Madeline Wuntch. He begins the speech by saying that even though they were bitter rivals throughout their lives, it was only Madeline who truly challenged him. He was in tears as he remembered his true arch nemesis for the one last time.

"As everyone knows, Madeline and I were bitter rivals, but I have come to realize that no one challenged me like she did or made me feel as alive. Our relationship was like an epic chess match, and it's hard to believe that she will never make another move. So she's gone, and I wish she had not. I will miss you, Madeline Wuntch."

Neither Sedgwick nor the makers revealed the reason for her sudden exit. She then joined ABC's Call Your Mother in a leading role.
