Hellbound is a South Korean supernatural dark fantasy thriller show that has been written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho with Choi Gyu-seok. Featuring Yoo Ah-in, Kim Hyun-joo, Won Jin-ah, and others, Hellbound is set in the year 2022 and revolves around supernatural beings that have suddenly appeared on Earth and are now condemning people to Hell. The show has two seasons till now and it premiered on Netflix on November 19, 2021. It quickly became one of the most watched shows on the streaming platform and received positive reviews for its plot and visuals.
In the show, an “angel” appears on Earth and begins to deliver prophecies and condemns people to Hell at a future time or mere seconds away. Then, three “demons” appear and maul and incinerate the person’s body. The show also focuses on a detective investigating the supernatural phenomena and on a television producer and his wife, who try to accept the fact that their newborn baby has been condemned to Hell. The show has many interesting characters and below mentioned, is a quick exploration of the tragic fate of Min Hye-jin’s mother.
The origins of New Truth and its relation with Min Hye-jin
In Hellbound, apart from the angels and demons, the show also looks at the violence and immoral behavior that erupts as two organizations spring up and capitalize on people’s fears. One of them is New Truth, founded by Jung Jin-soo, who is condemned to Hell and creates this organization to make sense of the situation. People join him and the organization becomes powerful.
After Jung Jin-soo’s death however, a pastor, Kim Jeong-chil, becomes the leader of New Truth and rules the organization with fear. They controlled society and Arrowhead. This is where Min Hey-jin’s story connects with the plot of Hellbound.
Why does Min Hye-jin's mother get killed in Hellbound?
Min Hye-jin is an attorney and is played by the actor Kim Hyun-joo. She is a strong, ambitious, and smart lawyer who protests against the New Truth Church and its extremist Arrowhead devotees, who try to profit from people’s fears.
In Hellbound, Min Hye-Jin’s mother suffers from a tragic fate as she is brutally attacked by members of the Arrowhead cult. Unfortunately, Min Hye-jin’s mother dies due to the attack and Min Hye-jin decides to oppose the cult forces with even more ambition and rage. The attack happened because Min Hye-jin is Park Jeong-ja’s lawyer and she helps him.
When people from Arrowhead came to know that Min Hye-jin was helping Park Jeong-ja get money from the New Truth, and was therefore helping a sinner, Arrowhead hunted down her mother and ruthlessly beat her and left her for dead.
