Young Sheldon, the prequel series of The Big Bang Theory, focused on Sheldon as a child and followed him through his growing-up years. In Young Sheldon Season 1 Episode 2, a character named Tam is introduced, who becomes Sheldon’s best friend. Despite the gap in their age, Sheldon and Tam bonded quickly because of their interest in similar things.

However, fans of both the shows already know that things did not go well between Tam and Sheldon as the latter felt betrayed by Tam since he did not keep his promise of going to the same university as Sheldon after he met his girlfriend.

Let us now explore in detail what happened to Tam in Young Sheldon.

Tam and Sheldon used to be best friends, as revealed in Young Sheldon

Since Sheldon and Tam became friends quickly over their shared love for comics and their mutual feeling of being considered outcasts, Tam’s character made steady appearances till Young Sheldon Season 4.

However, after that he seemed to vanish from Sheldon’s life and eventually made another appearance in Young Sheldon Season 7. However, what happened between them is revealed in an episode of The Big Bang Theory, where Tam’s adult version is introduced.

It is then revealed that Tam and Sheldon had planned on going to the same university, but this could not be followed because Tam betrayed Sheldon and went along with his girlfriend. While explaining what happened between them, Sheldon tells Amy in The Big Bang Theory Season 12,

“When I got accepted to grad school at Caltech, I was afraid to move so far away from home, so Tam said he’d move out here with me and be my roommate. Then over the summer, he got a girlfriend… even after reading all the pamphlets I gave him about social diseases. Anyway, Tam stayed with her in Texas and I had to move out here all by myself. It was [scary]. I was lonely. I thought I’d never make a friend again — and for a long time, I didn’t.”

This shows how Tam’s going away severely affected Sheldon, who had always struggled making friends and understanding people. When Tam appears in The Big Bang Theory, he is shown to be a happily married man with two kids.

Tam’s reappearance in Young Sheldon helped the viewers to understand his relationship with Sheldon better and also put his appearance in The Big Bang Theory more in context while also highlighting where their relationship stands now.

Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory can be streamed on Paramount+ and Netflix, respectively.
