Netflix’s new thriller, Black Rabbit, unravels a volatile tale of brotherhood, betrayal, and the crushing weight of guilt, ending in tragedy for many of its characters.
The series follows the volatile relationship between two estranged brothers, Vince and Jake, who are desperately trying to escape their dark past. While Jake has turned his life around and now runs the titular restaurant and bar in the heart of New York, Vince is still escaping a life of debt and loan sharks.
Anna is a young woman who works as a bartender at Jake's Black Rabbit. In Episode 1, it was revealed that she was s*xually assaulted by Jules, the owner of an art gallery and one of the bar patrons at her place of work. While she was about to escape this life and start afresh somewhere, she was hunted down by loan sharks looking for Vince. After a turn of chaotic events, Junior and Babbitt hunt down Anna at her house, where she accidentally hits her head and dies.
More on Anna's fate in Black Rabbit in our story.
Anna is first assaulted and then tragically killed in Black Rabbit
In Black Rabbit Episode 1, Anna is fired from the titular bar for missing two consecutive shifts. However, as it is revealed later, Anna was s*xually assaulted by Jules, one of the wealthy bar patrons. Jules' behaviour towards Anna is directly symbolic of Jake's lifestyle. While Vince completely spiraled and fell into a trap of debts and loan sharks, Jake is no different. It appeared that he had finally escaped his past and turned his life around with Black Rabbit, but that was not the case.
Not only was his bar practically an all-boys club that festered questionable behaviour like Jules, but he was also embezzling money from his own business to fund his elite lifestyle. The third floor of his bar was a hub of celebrity gathering, which made him famous across New York, but also excused horrible behaviour in the name of enjoyment.
It was only because of Jake's ignorance that Jules was able to s*xually assault Anna, and even when Jake had the physical evidence (surveillance video of Jules spiking Anna's drink), he turned a blind eye to his behaviour. Moreover, he was more concerned about Black Rabbit's reputation because Anna was talking with the reporters.
Anna's tragic story concluded when Vince made up a fake story to Junior and Babbitt, who mistook the innocent woman for a blackmailer. Just when Anna was about to escape from her house and leave for the airport (as per Campbell's arrangements), Mancuso’s henchmen caught up to her. While Anna hid in the bathroom, Junior banged on the door and threatened to kill her. In this chaos, Anna hits her head in the bathroom and dies.
Anna got bittersweet justice in Black Rabbit
One of the most important themes in Black Rabbit is guilt and the weight of one's past. While Vince was the living embodiment of this theme throughout the series, Jake was no different. He chose to turn a blind eye to Anna's r*pe at the hands of Jules and even hid the video evidence.
Jake was a powerful man who could have easily voiced his support for his bartender. Anna would have benefited if Jake had stood up against Jules and handed him over to the police, but he did the exact opposite. The choices Jake and Vince made directly led to Anna's tragic death in the show. She was constantly exploited in the series, first by Jules and his fixer Campbell, and then by Jake and Vince, who practically signed her death warrant by not helping her.
While Anna met her tragic end, Jules was finally caught by the police. The bartender got a bittersweet moment of justice when Jules was arrested for assaulting her at the bar.
In the final moments of the series, Roxy (the head chef) and her kitchen employee, Tony, honored their late friend by opening a new restaurant named Anna.
