Sergeant Grey is an important character in the show. Here’s a quick look at his character.
Who is Sergeant Grey in The Rookie? Details explored

Played by Richard T. Jones, Sergeant Grey, begins as Lieutenant Wade Grey in The Rookie. He is Lieutenant I and is the watch commander at the Mid-Wilshire Division. He then became Sergeant II in the show. His callsign is either 7-Adam-100 or 7-Lincoln-200 in the series.
During the early seasons of the show, Grey was shown to have been shot as a patrol officer, 10 years before the events of the first season, and his partner was killed. The two were shot by Russell Scanlin, who was high on drugs. Grey is married to Luna and they have a daughter called Dominique.
As the watch commander in his precinct, Grey supervises the officers that are under him. In the show, he initially sees Nolan with annoyance and does not take him seriously.
However, as the seasons progress, Grey begins to trust Nolan more and he even confides in him that he does not like Harper as Harper does not regard police protocol and is arrogant. On the other hand, Grey also deals with personal matters as he wants to shift to New York to stay closer to his daughter who got accepted into Cornell and his wife Luna wants him to retire from the police force.
Sergeant Grey is also an important character in The Rookie as he spearheads many cases where systemic racism is an important theme and he leads through the discussions on this topic. For example, during the T.O. Doug Stanton case. In the show, Grey also boldly testifies against Russell Scanlin, the man who shot Grey’s partner.
In The Rookie, there are times when Grey has to reprimand Nolan for his actions, but there are also moments when the two get together to solve crime.
Sergeant Grey in Season 7 of The Rookie

The seventh season of the show is the latest installment and, in this season, Sergeant Grey decides to cover Lucy. Since the beginning, Grey has a soft spot for Lucy as she also began as a rookie and Grey began to look out for her.
In an interview with Screen Rant, actor Richard T. Jones talks about how the character of Lucy has an impact upon Sergeant Grey. He states, “It's funny because when it comes to Grey and his connection—he's connected to Tim. He's connected to Bradford very strongly…But the nearest and dearest to his heart is probably Lucy. I'm always reading the script like, "I love me some Lucy, because everything she does, I kind of cover for her." You know what I'm saying? Even though she's great. But I think Grey wants her to succeed so much. I think when she succeeds, he's going to get a fulfillment that I don't think he has with everybody else.”
With Lucy proving herself to be a capable officer and becoming a sergeant, Lucy and Sergeant Grey will have an important role and dynamic in the next season of The Rookie.
The show is available on Amazon Prime Video.
