What If...? Season 3 concluded on a high note with an action-packed finale. The episode, eighth of the season, reveals that the Watcher's name is Uatu. Moreover, we've supposedly lost Captain Carter at the end of the episode.

The finale opens with a flashback showing Uatu learning about the nature of his duties from his mentor, the Eminence. The flashback ends after Uatu takes an oath not to interfere with all that happens across the multiverse, and tells the Eminence he'll never fail him.

As the What If...? episode shifts from flashback to the present, the Eminence expresses disappointment over the times when Uatu interfered with event of the multiverse and changed things. Names such as Reed Richards, Nick Fury, and even Madisynn are brought up by the Eminence as he addresses Uatu.

The Eminence then brings Captain Carter right next to Uatu. The three Watchers — the Eminence, the Incarnate and the Executioner — are about to kill Uatu and Captain Carter when Infinity Ultron comes crashing in and rescues the two. He instructs Captain and Uatu to board the ship while he serves as a distraction. He is, however, killed as his head explodes. This sends our heroes to an unknown universe, beyond the one they wanted to escape to.

Captain Carter and her team become Watchers in the What If...? finale

As the three Watchers try to crush Uatu and the heroes under a rock, the former has an idea. He tells Captain Carter and her team consisting of Kahhori, Byrdie, and Storm to take the Watchers oath. Once Captain Carter and her team have taken the oath, they have the same powers as the three Watchers. With these powers, they successfully subdue the three Watchers and offer them a chance to yield.

However, the three Watchers refuse to yield and merge into one in the sky. The merged and powerful being tells the heroes that they won't die just in the present universe, but in every universes across the multiverse, and be completely be eradicated. As this happens, we see the different versions of Storm, Kahhori, and Byrdie about to die. Captain Carter seems to be suffering the same fate, too, when she takes one final stand.

She launches towards the merged Watcher entity in the sky, supposedly killing herself but, in the process, separating the three Watchers. However, they are still alive. The Eminence tries to use his powers to kill the heroes, but his powers are not working anymore, revealing the intent behind Captain Carter's sacrifice: To transport everyone to the Universe the heroes wanted to go.

Captain Carter's sacrifice and What If...? Season 3 ending explained

It is revealed that the heroes wanted to travel to Strange Supreme's universe because it is only the universe where the Watchers are powerless. Uatu finally convinces the Eminence to not just watch and observe, but also see with wonder, and learn from those they watch over. Later, as Storm, Kahhori, Byrdie and Uatu mourn Captain Carter, he invites the three to join him in looking over the multiverse.

However, a question needs to be answered. Is Captain Carter gone?

Speculations about Captain Carter's role after What If...?

All that remains of Captain Carter at the end of What If...? Season 3 finale is her broken shield. Nothing else, however, suggests that she could have perished. A Deadline report on December 13, 2024 said actress Haley Atwell returns as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday. However, it is yet to be confirmed if she plays Peggy Carter, the human, or Captain Carter, the supersoldier.

In live action fomat, we have seen both. A version of Captain Carter appeared on Earth-838 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The version, however, was decapitated by her own Vibranium shield, by a dream-walking Wanda Maximoff. So if her character in Avenger: Doomsday is Captain Carter, it could be a different version. For now, we have to do is wait and watch for further details.

Like every other MCU movie and show, all three seasons of What If...? are available to stream on Disney+. Watch this show if you want an alternate spin on existing Marvel stories.
